New Owner - 550e

Greeetings,
Just picked up my 2026 550e. Enjoying the car and still learning the myriad of technological details in the car.

I work hard and despite loving to do so, rarely have time to tool on my vehicle. Which was a factor in biting hook line and sinker at the dealership. I ended up purchasing the "BMW Ultimate Care+" and "BMW Ultimate Protection" packages at the dealership.

However, as I am reading the fine print, I am not sure if they are worth it so I figured I'd post on here and ask y'alls opinion. I can still return them for a refund.

Thanks,
MB

In a word: YES.
We’ve owned 4 BMWs and 3 BMW bikes and the warranties are great reassurance. Congratulations on your new 550E. Welcome to the club.

These types of extended warranties can buy a lot of peace of mind. That shouldn’t be ignored.

However it’s also important to realize that dealerships don’t sell the extended warranties at a loss. These warranties are profit centers for dealerships. So getting one of the warranties isn’t likely to save you money over your ownership of the 550e. Again, you’re buying peace of mind, not an overall cheaper way to get your car repaired.

Another common approach is to take the cost of that extended warranty and sock it away in a high-interest bearing account somewhere. If you have the discipline to leave it there except for using it for repairs to the car, you’ll likely end up ahead financially, but maybe with less peace of mind along the way.

How long do you plan to keep the car? You can buy these plans at any time up until the factory plans expire. It may cost a little more at that time, but you've just paid for plans you aren't going to use for quite some time & they begin to pro-rate the value almost immediately.

If you decide to sell/trade the car in 2 years, you'll only receive a pro-rated refund on these plans that you never used. Also, you can typically buy them much cheaper from an online dealer than from the dealer who sold you the car.

I say cancel them.

Very true. I do wonder why the price plummets for BMW’s without a warranty. You can certainly save money by self insuring but I’m not a gambler.

Yet, spending $ on a "protection plan" you may never use is, in fact, gambling.

Agreed. Use the factory warranty until it's about to expire, then extend it.

OP, are these packages actually extending the warranty anyway? Or are they just making the warranty less limited by covering more things?

I think the Vehicle Service Contract (Extended Warranty) is worth it, if you got a good price on it. Modern BMWs are quite reliable in the drive train, but their is a lot of expensive technology in the car.

On the other hand, in my experience I did not break even on the Ultimate Care Plus, which is basically prepaid service visits. You get (I think) three years of Oil Changes anyway, so this pays for consumables like brakes and windshield wipers (and pays for the oil changes after the first few). If you drive in an extremely sporty manner, you may burn through brakes, and this will be a good deal for you, but for many people, the factory brakes last longer than the time period for the Ultimate Care Plus.

All insurance is essentially a gamble. The only question is how risk-averse you are, how much peace of mind the warranty will give you, and what that's worth.
