Do BMW owner's deserve the reputation they have?
As a BMW owner, do you feed the stereotype or do you disprove it? You confident in your position on that?

If the rep is there then it's deserved. Problem lies in the affordability of older BMWs which get into the hands of the immature. If Ferrari's were affordable they'd have the same rep. It's up to us to change it by stopping the street racing, aggressive driving in traffic and thinking we own the road, get out of my way attitude.

This was my first BMW and I have only had it two weeks or so. I purchased this car because I like its looks. I don’t feel like I am any different than I was previously.

Not using blinkers is an antiquated stereotype. The true BMW driver always signals simultaneously with making their move. Never use it to ask others around you for permission or pausing to announce your intention. It's simply done to check the box with a sprinkle of passive aggressiveness. Yes, we've evolved.

All drivers are evaluated on the George Carlin scale - everyone who drives faster than me is a maniac and everyone who drives slower than me is a moron. I suspect I'm aggressive enough that 20% of the morons out there think I'm a maniac, but I'm way less aggressive than the maniacs I see out there every day doing 90 in rush hour traffic, weaving in and out, no turn signals, etc., and it was the same when I was driving my Civic (first new car) 35 years ago as it is now with my BMW. When I was first driving it was Cadillac I always commented on - "How come such top of the line cars don't come with turn signals?" Same for drivers here with IL plates instead of MO. I never had a negative view of BMW drivers when I wasn't one. Plus ca change... |

You haven't actually defined "the stereotype."
You mean things like "aggressive driving," speeding with or without a radar detector, disabling proven pollution reducing technology, washing cars with distilled water and other OCD maintenance and detailing? Nah - there is nothing to that. This forum proves it. |

Good point, and the detailing thing is one area where I'll admit to changing. I've always been pretty OCD about maintenance (the Acura I drove before the BMW was at 200k miles and 20 years old, having bought it new), so that's the same as is the driving (discussed in prior post). But the BMW is the first car I've had ceramic coated and the first one I've put more effort into washing than just running through the local mechanical car wash several times a year. FWIW.

At least in my area (Southern California), the most consistently inconsiderate drivers by far are between Tesla and certain Toyotas like Corollas and Priuses. They also happen to be dime a dozen here.

I've never noticed any particular car make over the other pertaining to signal use. But I don't think pickup trucks even come with turn signals.

When it comes to drivers there is not any particular reputation for any particular brand. I would say there are far more regional reputations for drivers.
What might be tailgating in one region is the norm in another region. Signal once and switch lanes in one region might be considered cutting someone off in another region. Laying on the horn is another. There are more ... |

If I were going to earn my reputation as a jerk, I wouldn't change lanes without signaling, I'd ask the OP why "owner's" has an apostrophe in the thread title.

My recent favorite object of scorn are CRV drivers. I have no idea why or how, bu the ratio of boneheaded drivers to one model is through the rough on that one. From a scientific perspective, some folks from UC-Ber ran a study and found out that drivers of more expensive cars were much less likely to stop for a pedestrian and much more likely to skip ahead at a four-way stop. BMW fits the bill: https://www.wcvb.com/article/study-r...%20the%20rules. HTH, a
