and yet the awd g80 weighs 4000+ pounds. You get nice carbon seats then they negate all weight savings by making them power operated.

Even Pagani with all his carbon magic couldn't make the G8X look good. It just gets worse the more I see it.

I like CF when there is a functional use, so much of it is in place of plastic where the function and weight doesn't change. CF - mirror caps, interior trim, etc. Have my doubts about what a CF diffuser does over a plastic one.

Very good information, thanks. Keep in mind that the properties for CFRP with epoxy resin matrix, which is used in the majority of the applications, are different than the dry CFRP, so yes it's a much lighter material than steel (about 80 lb for CFRP vs 490 lb per cubic ft for steel), but it's not stiffer than steel (Elastic modulus about 12 msi vs 29 msi). For sure it's much stronger than steel (120 ksi vs 36 ksi), remember that steel yields while CFRP fractures, so you wouldn't design to it's ultimate capacity, more to about 50%. CFRP is great material for impact and cyclic loading (good for fatigue and vibration). I agree with David70, CFRP is a great material when it's used in an optimum and functional way, and not for decoration. I spent over 25 years using it in many structural applications, at the same time I didn't recommend it in other applications.

Well said! We are past peak CF and it's time for it to be limited to functional applications.

Does anyone else feel that with the switch over to electric cars, CF is a good area of investment? I know bmw has invested in SGL. Since then their stock price has come down drastically (drastically meaning I'm glad I didn't put money into sgl when they first got together, but now might be a good time). Thoughts? Sgl's ticker is SGLFF. Would love to know a traders take on this.
Edit: lol just read the inext won't rely on cf as much as the i3 and i8 did and sgl cut 500 jobs just last month. Sometimes I feel like Mush from a Bronx tale- don't go where I put my money

Such a great thread - Thanks for posting BMWGirlFL ‼️
It's so unfortunate that BMW unloaded their carbon fiber plant in Moses Lake Washington |

Interesting information, BUT...
Carbon bits and bobs, but if BMW still can't figure out how to properly punch/drill holes in the M3/M4's CFRP Roofs for the Roof Rack Mount that's a continual problem that needs to be addressed ASAP! |

Yet they got rid of the carbon fiber driveshaft and strut brace the F8x had.

Thanks for sharing, but still don't understand why BMW design the rear diffuser like that, not covering the bottom of the car and exhaust, does it really functional?
