Wireless router recommendation
I need a recommendation for a high performance wireless router that's not necessarily going to break the bank. Doesnt need to have a ton of ports for the hardwired stuff but needs to be reliable. Single band is perfectly fine. It's just been ages since I've even looked at this stuff so I would appreciate some insight on the latest tech.
My current one lost the wireless capability... started noticing the wireless speeds dropping from 80mbps to 10 over past month. While my hardwired lines stayed constant at 150mbps. |

Probably the radio in the wireless router is starting to degrade and will eventually fail.
You'll definitely want to have dual band capability. More specifically, you'll want to have 5 GHz capability as there are more available channels and less interference (currently) which will translate into more reliable connections and better performance. In the SOHO arena of wireless routers, many of them are pretty much the same. The ones which tend to get a decent following are Linksys, Asus, and Netgear. I can't recommend one personally to you as I haven't looked at SOHO class equipment for many years. I've moved on to business class equipment for my home network. A good place to check out reviews on SOHO wireless routers is http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/ |

Check out the Ubiquity UAP-AC-PRO. It is a wireless access point. They don't make routers with built in wireless but you can just run this AP separately. Great performance, management interface, and bang for the buck.

Thanks guys. That Asus router seems to have good reviews and is priced well. I never thought about them in the networking segment. I've always viewed them as a mobo maker.

I'll throw my hat in the ring for the ASUS routers too. Lightning hit in the neighborhood cooked my RT-N56U. Currently, I'm rocking an RT-AC68U. Superb range for both, great reliability, and very user-friendly firmware

I'm running the Airport Extreme. Very reliable and haven't had any problems. I used to go through a router every 2-3 years before. The routers run hot and the wireless performance degrades over time. I've noticed the Apple runs cool and has a active fan inside.

Asus ftw.
Currently running this with 0 issues. https://www.amazon.com/RT-N66U-Dual-.../dp/B006QB1RPY Also a tip: Routers get killed from heat. They are small computers afterall. Be sure not to place it ontop of or underneath your modem.

I have 53 of these deployed all over my office building along with UAP-LR's and they are fantastic. 2 years going strong and not one device has failed yet.

If you dont care about security then most any best buy linksys/similar will do
If you DO care about security then you should be looking at something like the SOHO solutions from Check Point, SonicWall or similar. You will spend more but you actually get a next gen FW with actual security |
