Yes. Too many codes.

However, the 4 Series is also planned to come as an ICE, and derivative codes and types have already been assigned.

There are no plans for an M4 as an ICE, though.

Not approved yet.

In discussion.

But what do I know...we will see.

ttt_xxxxxxxxxx Doesn't the current M2 already share the platform with the M3 and M4? How would this be different?

And does a "short M3" mean something like the return of a "ti" version?

Confused by whether this and a potential ICE 4 series will exist with just as an M version or just an AG version or both or neither? You and hb seem to be saying the opposite, unless those are the same discussions going on internally with northing yet decided.

Also fair to assume none of this happens before middle of 2029 if thats when the G42/G87/G22/G82 have had their life extended to?

There is no ice 4 Series. At least not approved now

I don't really see what the point of an entry-level M3 is when the G87 is only $10k cheaper than the G80, unless it happens to be the only coupe option in the absence of a proper M4. An M2 is only 4" shorter wheelbase than the M4, actually weighs more when considering spec for spec, and is built on the G42 already. A "shortened" two-door M3 with the same interior quality would be pretty much identical in performance and price, to a point where I don't see how it could be considered a entry model, especially when designing a bespoke chassis for it.

In that sense, it would essentially be the "successor" to the M2. With the 2 Series going away, BMW would need a new entry-level M car. Whether the G89 actually gets built is still up in the air. At the moment, the project is still under financial review and hasn’t been approved yet.Since the G89 would be based on the same architecture, BMW obviously wouldn’t be able to offer it at the same kind of price point as the G87. Which also brings up the question of whether it might just be too expensive to position it as an entry-level M car.
So basically there won't be a next generation 2 series? Thus no next generation M2?

I'm not sure I agree with the idea the 2 series is gonna get axed unless they're planning on replacing it with something else entirely. Making the M2 disappear doesn't really fit with the whole 'launching 30 M cars by 2029' goal. Then again, with 8 getting shelved again in favor of a new 6, I suppose anything is possible at this point. Just seems silly to me that we would get 2-3 years of M2 with XDrive before the badge gets shelved.

Correct, the current state of affairs is that there will not be a next-gen RWD ICE 2 series and consequently no next-gen M2 either.

There are 8 "M" cars when just considering the new 3 series alone. One model isn't really going to make a big dent in their grand plan.

M cars share the body-in-white with their series models (the XM being the exception). Where should M get their G87 successor when BMW no longer makes a 2er? I agree it's sad, but those "30 M cars" will include quite a few BEVs and M Performance models I'm afraid.
