Front & Rear Bulbs Failing Together at ~6 Years — Normal BMW Lifespan or Coincidence?
Happy New Year, everyone!
Here’s a small lighting saga from my corner of the BMW universe. After about six years of faithful service, the front bulbs on my 2015 428i finally started flickering. Rather than going straight to pricey OEM replacements, I took the value-plus-practical route and picked up this set from Amazon: https://amzn.to/4jYqUG4 They’ve been solid—but now I’m starting to notice the rear bulbs flickering as well. What caught my attention is the timing: front and rear both aging out at roughly the same point. It makes me wonder whether ~6 years is simply the realistic lifespan for these bulbs on our cars, regardless of brand—or whether OEM vs non-OEM actually makes a measurable difference over time. Before I roll the dice on another replacement, I figured I’d lean on the collective experience here: • Has anyone had genuinely good long-term luck with a non-OEM bulb lasting beyond the ~6-year mark? • Or has anyone upgraded to a brighter LED solution that plays nicely with 4-series coding—no errors, flicker, or CANbus headaches? At the moment, I’m considering this rear bulb option: https://amzn.to/4akXaPx I’ve done a fair amount of homework, and iJDMTOY has been a familiar name in the BMW lighting world since the mid-2000s, so compatibility isn’t really my concern. What I’m more curious about is whether the landscape has meaningfully improved in 2026. From real-world experience: • Is a ~6-year lifespan simply “normal” for non-OEM LED bulbs on our cars? • And separately, do BMW OEM bulbs actually deliver better longevity and reliability—enough to justify a 2–3× price premium? Would really appreciate hearing what’s held up well long-term—and what you’d confidently buy again today. Last edited by jcortez75; 01-26-2026 at 08:01 PM.. |
