Why is BMW removing the small M details?
Lately I’ve noticed that even though many customers still choose the M Sport Package or the M Sport Pro Package, BMW seems to be removing more and more of the small M details.
It started with the keys — nowadays almost all models get the same basic key, except for the full M models. Now it also looks like BMW has begun removing the small M badges on the fenders that older generations used to have. Personally, I think this has disappointed a large part of the customer base. Many people cannot afford a full M model, but they still enjoyed having an M Sport version that felt more special than the standard trim, without pretending to be a real M car. It was a good balance. Since I’m planning to order a car with the M Sport Pro Package, do you think it’s worth asking the dealer if they can still include the M key and the M fender badges, or is this simply no longer possible with current models? M Sport isn’t an M, was always silly how overbadged some of the non-M cars got with M badges.
My wife’s G01 X3 xDrive30i had way too many unnecessary M badges for a non-M model. The 2026 G45 X3 xdrive20 that I’m currently driving while my X5 is at the dealer has M badges everywhere including the guards, totally ridiculous. My X5 M60i has the M-style key and M badges everywhere, but at least it’s an M Performance model (and actually has an M engine!). I intend to take most of the badges off when I get it PPFed. If you want your non-M to have M badges ask for them. No one that doesn’t know cars will care, and BMW guys will laugh. |

What models and engines are you talking about? You’re not offering enough context.
My wife’s 2025 iX2 xDrive30 electric car has M badges on the guards and around the interior. As mentioned the 2026 X3 xDrive20 (base petrol) I’m driving on loan from my dealer has them. Neither of these cars are even M Perf, yet have all the badges. Of course you can ask your dealer to fit some M badges or just do it yourself, every chance they’ll want to charge you for it. They’re just spare parts from the parts dept. Key would be far more expensive, though you might be able to get replacement shells off eBay or something and swap the contents of the key that comes with the car. |

M used to stand for Motorsport. Now it stands for Marketing. And Mexico.

It's a good thing. Way too many "M" badges on non-M cars. It seems you can find one even on a poverty spec X1 these days if you look hard enough.
I've never owned a BMW M car, so this is not elitism. I just don't like how the BMW M brand has diluted itself over the years. |

There was a time when M cars, real M cars, had five or less M badges. On the entire car.

Who cares about keys? The key never leaves my pocket so no one sees it. You don’t need it for anything in the car so long as it is in your pocket or purse.

At 60 years old, with two ///M cars and an AMG in the garage, I used to get genuinely annoyed when BMW or Mercedes slapped ///M or AMG badges on models that weren’t true performance variants. It felt like the brands were diluting something that enthusiasts had earned through engineering, heritage, and a higher price tag.
Over time, though, I’ve come to see it for what it is: a marketing strategy. These manufacturers know people will pay extra for the prestige of the badge, even if the car underneath isn’t a full-fledged ///M or AMG. And honestly, it doesn’t bother me anymore, although I will be first to call them out on it. As long as I don’t see a ///M or AMG badge stuck on a Honda Civic, I can live with it.

BMW NA didn’t want those mini-M Badges on the front fenders of M Sports here, and they created an Option S3DZA “Delete extra external lettering” for F3x specifically to remove them.

Personally, I rather not have any M badges on my vehicles that are not actual M vehicles. I get the marketing but some people get sucked up into believing the marketing and think they actually have an M car when they don't.
This happened a while ago when BMWNA was doing the M Car Control Clinic. During the morning brief before we got split up into pairs to work with our instructors, one of the instructors asked who owned an M car. Some hands went up. I got paired with this lady that had put her hand up to that question. During the small talk with our instructor, he asked what BMW car we had. She said she had a M235i. I didn't a mental eye roll. This M over badging hasn't escaped the Motorrad side of the house either. The flagship S1000RR seems to have fallen victim to it over the years. For a while there wasn't much in the way of M packaging. BMW would release limited run special editions of the RR such as the HP4. With the K67 generation, the M package was introduced. I get it. There wasn't an M1000RR....yet. The M package would have specific options that wouldn't be available with base model bikes. The M1000RR was introduced but the M package continued on with the RR. Now, the only specific options that come with the M package are the tri color paint, M seat, and the billet levers/adjustable rearsets. You can get the billet levers/adjustable rearsets as an option upgrade on the base bikes and maybe the M seat. There's nothing too special with the M package now. |

The only reason one cares if the car has M badges on it is so that other people think it is an M. Period, end of story.
You know what you ordered/bought. The tiny fender badge doesn't make the car go faster, handle better, or resale for more. If the badge is so important to you, save up your pennies and buy a real M car. |

Those badges are nothing but bling. Why do YOU want them? Quote:
I could not care less what is on that key, and whether an "M badge" is on it, or not. I would prefer some kind of a BMW symbol on it, so that I could tell it apart from the keys for other brands in my garage. But other than that, who cares! Quote:
