iPhones have Samsung screens... Toyota Supra is actually a BMW this list of such things can be very long ![]() if they can make it work financially, I don't see why not. it's not like they are going to have BMW build the whole car and badge it as a Mercedes. |

I have a Prince BMW/Peugeot engine. I've just looked it up to reference here and AI ("AI responses may include mistakes."
) says "The Prince engine won the International Engine of the Year award for eight consecutive years, a record for its class."!!! REALLY?!! At Peugeot it was an ABSOLUTE DISASTER, it almost killed the company, AFAIK. BMW's N13 take is MUCH better reliability-wise , some even dare to tune it up and surprisingly don't complain much (probably too shy to admit their terrible mistake ). Yet, it's not up to my expectations : at 70000 careful kilometers I've had premature (I believe!) yet expensive repairs. Two last winters were troublesome and another one is approaching. ![]() |

Western governments are self-destructing their own civilization, so decisions like these will become more and more common in the automotive world.

I'll believe it when I see it.
Mercedes and BMW a century-long rivalry. If this was remotely true, we would be hearing a joint PR announcement from the two companies. Not a dubiously online leak. Quote:
I had N14 engine car, and it self-destructed TWICE by ~80K miles. First time I had the block replaced (inexpensive, fun project), second time I donated the car to charity. Quote:

Although it's too early to say if this rumour is true or not, it's believable and likely that arrangements like this will start to pop up, as less and less money will be put into combustion engine technology, those cars comprising a (slowly) reducing portion of total sales.
Some OEMs have abandoned or will abandon their own ICE production in favor of buying from others, who will in turn benefit from economies of scale to keep going for longer. With BMW being both a legendary leader in combustion engines and one of the OEMs who have not committed to going full electric by any particular date, it stands to reason that they would be one of the remaining producers. This is not an opinionated take on whether electric or fossil fuel cars are better - simply an unavoidable consequence of the changing marketplace. |

No, as opposed to not over-regulating small* business, the lifeblood of personal liberty. I’d like to imagine the current M5 would be powered by a NA V10 pushing 666 horsepower if trends from the late 00’s continued. |

Looks like this rumour has legs. I'm not surprised as this is probably quicker and cheaper for MB than developing a clean sheet 4-cylinder engine. |

To me, it sounds pretty concrete that BMW is going to be building engines for Mercedes. Word is that starting around 2027, BMW’s B48 2.0‑liter turbo four will be going under the hood of certain Mercedes models. They’d be built at BMW’s Steyr plant in Austria, which cranks out over a million engines a year, and there’s even talk of diesels and joint U.S. production to dodge tariffs. This would be the first time in history BMW has ever built engines for its biggest German rival.
I’ve owned both BMWs and Mercedes over the years, and each brand has its own magic — BMW’s sharp, driver‑focused feel and Mercedes’ comfort and refinement. The idea of those strengths blending in one car is honestly exciting. If BMW’s engineering precision can meet Mercedes’ luxury DNA, that’s a win for anyone who loves driving. Why would Mercedes go this route? Turns out their EV‑only push isn’t moving as fast as they thought, especially in the U.S., so they need more plug‑in‑hybrid‑friendly engines. Their current four‑cyl is made in China, which is a headache for U.S. and European markets thanks to tariffs and politics. The B48, on the other hand, is already Euro 7 compliant, works great in hybrid setups, and can slot into a bunch of different models without a massive redesign. It’s actually part of a bigger trend — carmakers teaming up on stuff they used to guard like state secrets. Sharing tech cuts R&D costs, speeds up new model launches, and gives them more flexibility on where they build. And for us as buyers, it’s not a bad deal at all. The B48 is a proven, reliable engine that’s already in BMWs, MINIs, Toyotas, and Land Rovers. If Mercedes uses it, their customers could see better performance, better efficiency, and fewer “first‑year” issues — maybe even without a price hike. Looks like the old BMW vs. Mercedes rivalry might be softening, but if it means better cars, better value, and a blend of the best traits from both brands I’ve enjoyed owning, I’m all for it. |

BMW B46/48 cooling system grenades after 80k miles. Pity the owners out of warranty for this engine.
MB is a failed experiment as a manufacturer of 4-cylinder engines. Their current M274/M254/M264 is a catastrophe. They need a different idea. Honda has the world's best 4-cylinder engine at the moment. Honda has probably always had the world's best 4-cylinder engine. |
