Non polarized sunglasses for heads up display

I've been looking for some time for a pair to no avail until yesterday when I had to make a trip to Home Depot and saw some. I picked up a couple pair for $4.97ea. They work great and don't look that bad considering the price.

I standardized on Oakeley's across all my cars, one set in each.
For F80, I got the same (TwoFace) frame with non-polarized lenses.

If you want for the "sales", you can snag any glasses for 40-60% off, including those with custom prescription lenses.

YMMV,

On Ray-Ban USA the custom sunglasses I bought for 330 GBP (444$ today) on Ray-Ban UK some 10 years ago currently cost $287. That looks pretty inexpensive. My Ray-Bans are polarized though and non-polarized (still gradient) analogue cost $250 (I like rugged leather case!). I use these sunglasses to watch my step on the seashore I can only afford currently because they and their dogs shit literally everywhere there.

In the car I use simple (non-polarized, non-gradient) Reebok sunglasses matching the colour of the car. I don't remember how much they cost, they were a gift (but I chose them myself!). And I don't have a head up display anyway.

IMHO, the best quality non polarized sunglass brand is Serengeti. They are made in Italy out of mineral glass and well worth the money.

Their gradient amber colored lens which I have is amazing when driving into the glare at sundown.

You don't see it sold at too many retail stores, but if you live near an "Airport Pilot's" store where they cater to people who fly, you will usually see them on display. Similar to reading the HUD in our cars, pilots also require a non polarized lens in order to read their instruments.

When you order online read the description carefully as they also sell polarized lenses in the same frame styles.

https://www.serengeti-eyewear.com/us...ns-sunglasses/

I have a navigator style frame which really protects my eyes when I put the top down in my Z4.

I like American Optical "Pilot" sunglasses. Have both polarized and non polarized but use polarized more often. If you look slightly sideways (occasionally) with polarized on you should be able to see the HUD.

It was a "No Go" when I tried to wear my Maui Jim's which are polarized. This is why I ordered the Serengeti non polarized glasses.

People might not remember the original "Serengeti Drivers" that were produced by Corning Optics in the 80's and 90's. They had amazing optical clarity and contrast and are considered by many eyewear professionals to be one of the best ever made!

Non-polarized is a total no-go for me; way too much glare in much of SoCal's concrete jungles and roadways. I've learned to slightly tilt my head when trying to view the HUD (like starlights mentioned), it's second nature now =P

I spazzed out the first time my HUD disappeared and I thought it wasn't working. It was shortly after purchasing my new-to-me bimmer. Took me a few moments to figure out it was due to my sunglasses.

Fun Fact Sidenote: Took me a couple days of hands on engine bay searching for my power steering fluid reservoir before I gave in, researched, and learned I have EPS. lol

+1 to Ray-Ban non-polarized, dedicated pair for driving. But meh, to each their own on this one, imo.

It's easy to get UV400 non-polarized sunglasses. That's what I did. I've always liked Serengeti's too.

Picked up a pair of RayBan Metas non-polarized. I’m not sure if Raybans make quality lenses, but they work fine. I really like my Maui Jim’s, but the ability to record and take photos, answer calls, etc, is very nice!

I collect sunglasses, watches, sneakers, and other daily wear items. When I buy sunglasses I get 3-4 pairs at a time because of how these shops discount your 2nd pair and often any pair after the 1st to 50% off.

In my 20's I wore designer sunglasses mostly Tom Ford, Gucci, Prada, and LV. These all suck when they break which always happens eventually.

In my 30's I moved into Ray Bans, Maui Jim, and Oakley in plastic frames only. I can change out lenses if they get scratched or just pitch them if broken.

I know BMW M makes some sunglasses but I have yet to try them out or see them in person to know if the quality is worthwhile.

I recommend that you stick with the Ray Bans, Maui Jims, and Oakleys. Also check out Serengeti, which I have as they make a fabulous optical quality non-polarized lens.

I can see my HUD fine with my polarized sunglasses but did have to bump up the brightness of it to be able to really see it. They're just some cheapo ones I got off Amazon though have been complimented on 'em.

The reality is, the clearer you see the HUD, the less effective the polarization of the lens is. Most glare comes from the bottom, as the light is reflected off horizontal surfaces into your eyes, which is the same angle as the HUD. Either your sunglasses are oriented incorrectly or are simply not blocking as much of the glare as a quality lens from something like Maui Jims.

That being said, some blockage of glare is better than none, and perhaps the cheaper, less effective lenses might be the way to go for HUDs! Mind sharing a link?

I have my seat set pretty far down and back so maybe I'm not looking quite as low through the lenses as others might be and that helps somewhat? I don't remember which pair is in which car but they're either one or the other of these...

My advice on sunglasses:

Ignore everything that comes from Luxottica or Safilo. These 2 make most of the household /designer brands:

**Luxottica (EssilorLuxottica) – Sunglass Brands**

**Proprietary brands:**

* Ray-Ban
* Oakley
* Persol
* Oliver Peoples
* Vogue Eyewear
* Arnette
* Alain Mikli
* Costa del Mar

**Licensed brands:**

* Giorgio Armani
* Brunello Cucinelli
* Burberry
* Chanel
* Coach
* Diesel
* Dolce & Gabbana
* Ferrari
* Jimmy Choo
* Michael Kors
* Moncler
* Prada
* Ralph Lauren
* Swarovski
* Tiffany & Co.
* Tory Burch
* Versace

---

**Safilo Group – Sunglass Brands**

**Proprietary brands:**

* Carrera
* Polaroid Eyewear
* Smith Optics
* Blenders Eyewear
* Privé Revaux
* Seventh Street

**Licensed brands:**

* Banana Republic
* Boss
* Carolina Herrera
* David Beckham
* Victoria Beckham
* Dsquared2
* Fossil
* Havaianas
* Hugo
* Isabel Marant
* Jimmy Choo
* Kate Spade
* Levi’s
* Liz Claiborne
* Juicy Couture
* Missoni
* Marc Jacobs
* Moschino
* Pierre Cardin
* Ports Eyewear
* Rag & Bone
* Rebecca Minkoff
* Tommy Hilfiger
* Tommy Jeans
* Under Armour

To get really good sunglasses with great build quality and lenses that are top notch... look at smaller independent makers, microbrands.

AFAIK Maui Jim, Randolph Engineering are great... Serengeti is also good, though that also has been acquired bunch of times...

I personally own Randolph Engineering Sportsman glasses... Second set... First ones had a bad accident and got run over by a car..

Randolph: Proper clear glass lenses,no plastic crap... polarized, antireflective , hydrophobic etc... all the coatings on lenses, sturdy frame with with real 24K gold coating... They are a joy to look through. Quality is top notch. Can get polarized or without... they also offer prescription lenses. Only thing is... if you dont like aviator style glasses and prefer something crazier designwise then they may seem to you maybe bit too ordinary or boring. Randolph is also often used in many tv series and movies... So if you see aviator glasses in some Netflix show, great chances are they are Randolph...

And brown lenses are the best!But thats my personal opinion...
