IDdrive 4 NBT (non evo) and Apple Car play

Hi again,
My 6 series 2016 model has ID4 NBT (non evo) and I am planning to retrofit Apple car play. I have heard it can be done by installing an MMI box. By reading a bit I understand that MMI works using the AUX, meaning that you can't listen to car's radio or multimedia at the same time with car play. Also there is a very bad call audio.
There is someone here in the UK that said he can update my ID4 to ID6 3 tile system (without changing the screen... he will be changing something not sure what). ID6 will come with with car play losing car's built in nav but I will be able to navigate using car play and apple maps (or any other car play nav). Everything audio wise will work along with car play.. it will be like the original ID6 except the fact that car;s nav won't work.
Not sure what to choose, I would prefer to just long press a button and go whenever i like to car play but he tried to persuade me from it saying MMI is rubbish.

Another option is to retrofit an OEM iDrive 6 unit into the car and not lose any functionality. I installed an NBT EVO wig Apple CarPlay and love it. Still have my onboard GPS too for a backup.

I got the MMI box, it works like a treat! Perfect audio and audio call everything works apart from some car play navigation on HUD which can be expected if car play is not ‘native’ in the car

the mmi box has been working great for me. call audio is done via cars calling system and its excellent to use. i havent used the factory entertainment Ui ever since. the mmi keeps those features up to date since people and company upgrade the phones. bmw left 3g in the past so this solution just works

I have unpaired the phone from the car’s Bluetooth and left paired only to the box, as there was no sound from the mmi box while phone was paired in both the car and mmi.
Call quality from the box is good.

What are the recommendations to have Carplay with NBT? upgrade to EVO? or use an external box?

Just get an MMI box. It’s cheaper and easier than an entire ID retrofit.
