Having the "Supra" name as much as people hate that its not a Toyota is really only gonna help us BMW Folk... All these other world known tuners and shops are gonna mod the crap out of the B58 leading to more BMW friendly parts and maybe more future mods.

I wonder how much that benefit flow to my "older" B58 engine though...

Not calling anyone out specifically. Just making a general comment about people on this thread (and the old one) complaining about fake vents on a $50k car, but says nothing about it on much more expensive makes and models. But I do agree with the majority, fake vents are never ok.

Not only that, but everyone that got the 335hp version is getting screwed because someone at the dealer event did confirm that the 2021 model year will get a power bump (385hp) as hinted by bimmerpost insider.

I don't know if I'd go that far. It does seem the 335 number is very underrated compared to the dyno charts we've seen, right?

Correct, but the "385hp" is most likely also underrated. Also, I believe bimmerpost insider has said the B58D has stronger internals.

I have literally no knowledge on running a car company, but it feels like the Supra is going to be a HBR on how not to launch a car. Fatigue from years of teases, the perception of selling out a beloved brand (I.e. rebadging a BMW), a design that is polarizing, but considered too boring from the design experiment, poor timing of the actual launch with the near perfect reveal of an objectively storied competitor car, weaker tech specs compared to the car it sold it's soul to and almost instant rumors of better versions coming out the next year. I like the Supra, but I wanted to love it as a replacement to the Z4 coupe. Just not there, but depending on how depreciation hits it maybe I will consider it one day. |

How so? Tada-san has stated that the car will receive yearly updates. I don't see how that is any different than what other auto makers have done in the past. When I brought my 05 545i for BMW to only release the 550i for the 2006 year model. To be fair tons of other sports cars (NSX, GTR, FR-S/86 etc.) have gone through the same process. It isn't an automakers fault that auto media has nothing better to do then to run the same stories over and over with slightly angles. Rebaded BMW: That would be true if BMW was already developing a new Z4 and Toyota jumped on and piggy backed on the process. The fact is that both companies worked together on a joint chassis for both cars. Yes I know the drivetrain and suspension came from the BMW parts bin. Love it or hate it, we're going to see more of these joint ventures for low volume niche products. Weaker tech: Well there is a huge price differences between the I6 Supra and Z4 M40i. Looking at the sales and reviews, I think most people are just fine with less tech. Poor timing: You can blame BMW for stalling this project for a whole year. Polarizing design: I'm just wondering if you have seen one in person? I thought it look like shit in photo until I see one at the dealer. A lot of other people on various forums felt the same way as well. You can't please everyone, but for a $50k car I think it looks pretty nice in the flesh. |

For my point on Tada vs Elon lots of car companies do this and without the full details on what is planned for 2021 its hard to judge. However, if it is similar priced and at the 385 mark that has to specifically sting those that just literally picked up the car. I was under the impression that leading up to the launch Toyota was going to take the 86 approach and not do a significant bump to power. At least the e60 5 was out for a couple of years prior to the 550. I always felt bad for those that got a 2007 530 or 330 when the x35s came out the next year. The rebadged comments are generally an oversimplification. The use of BMW engine, drivetrain and infotainment do give some validity to the thought though. Personally I don't care as I am more of a Z4 fan than Supra. For the weaker tech I am specially referring to the difference in power to the Z4. Granted their is some price point consideration, but it does not provide for PR. Personally I would hold judgement until I could drive both. The underrated 335 should be more than enough for most people driving. Which would include myself. |

The E60 545i was sold for just two years before BMW introduced the 550i. I also betting that the Supra started production a few months behind the 2019 Z4 due to an agreement made between the two companies. BMW probably wanted the Z4 to have the spotlight and attention. Well that's the differences between BMW and Subaru. Even with less power I believe all the comparison videos and reviews have the Supra matching or exceeding the Z4's 0-60 and 1/4 mile time. |

I like how the Z4 and Supra are virtually the same yet the Supra seems substantially faster. Wonder extra special sauce they put in the B58 in the supra. Z4 isn’t much heavier.

I won't possibly be a buyer on one until next year anyway. I'm looking at a vasy array of different cars toward next fall. New BRZ, new STi (have to see what the specs end up being on both), see what prices do on a C7 Grand Sport, maybe a Camaro SS 1LE, Mustnag GT PP2, see if EcuTek cracks the 19+ Miata ECU so that Edlebrock will develop a new supercharger for it, etc. Last edited by OkieSnuffBox; 09-19-2019 at 12:53 PM.. |
