Sport4s Rubbing on Front
I have a '13 M6 that had Michelin Pilot Super Sport (original) with fronts 265 35 zr20.
Just had a set of Pilot Sport4s installed with 265 35 zr20's on the front. They are rubbing the front of the inner fender well plastic on tight left/right turns, on both sides. A full alignment performed, and another installer checked and verified they were mounted/aligned correctly. Any suggestions for work around? How to prevent rubbing? Do I need to go back to the PSS? |

Original rims? If not, most likely incorrect offset... Or are you using spacers?

Yes, original rims, no spacers, no modifications to the vehicle. Great suggestion on checking tirerack. According to their tire specs comparison chart the S4S tread depths is greater, but slightly narrower tread width. Tire diameter is the same. Not clear to me if this would be enough to cause the rubbing.
I think I have 2 options: 1) replace the fronts with PSS (star BMW) and eliminate the rubbing problem. If I do that, do I compromise general driving safety by keeping the S4S on the rear? Or should I suck it up and replace all 4 so they match. I'm not driving this on the track, I do like to drive a little too fast occasionally but 80% of the time, I'm not pushing the vehicle. 2) stay with the s4s on all four corners, minimize sharp turns where possible, and deal with the rubbing. I inspected the wheel wells, and the front air vents in the inner well have already got broken vent slats due to the rubbing (after <1000 miles). Not sure there can be any more damage at this point. But I'm sure the heat/friction from additional occasional rubbing will take a toll, at least until the tread wears down. The S4S rubber is nice and I'm getting a better ride. I'd love to keep them, but don't want to compromise driving safety or vehicle integrity. My local service shop didn't want to modify the inner well, so not sure I want to explore that further at this time. Maybe there is another option I'm not thinking about? Thanks for your input! |

This does strike me as a bit strange. Can you take a photo showing the wear on the guards?
I'm currently running 295's at the front and don't have any rubbing at all!

Here are some pics of the areas that are rubbing and breaking.
First 2 are left side. Last one is right side. I'm now curious and intrigued that you have 295's mounted with no problems.... |

275 / 35/ fronts on PS4S on my f13 coupe and NO rubbing whatsoever. This is indeed odd

I wonder if there is a difference somewhere up front on the coupe vs. the grancoupe because i tried to run 275/35/20 and those tires rubbed the same areas as in the pictures that DDF200 posted

Mostly out of paranoia, I went out and checked mine (coupe.) Not even a scratch on the plastic in that area, and i've had the tires on for a couple thousand miles already. You are right, there must be some difference in the GC and CP

I've been running my 295/30r20 setup on 10" wheels for about 6 weeks now and I go to full lock at least twice a day - not a single mark.
What year is yours and is it a Comp Pack? You say F12 which is the 'Vert, is that correct?

Looking at the pictures, perhaps a silly question, but is it possible that these are 21 inch wheels? 265/35x21 would most likely rub exactly like this... But if original wheels, unlikethe case...? |

Yes, 'vert. 2013, no Comp pack. All original. No mods. Photo is pre install of PS4S.

I'm not familiar with what a 21 inch wheel would look like. Does the pic help?

I've called the local dealer, no success or obvious issues identified over the phone ("Are you sure they are the correct size....") service wants to look at it and assess the issue. One suggested over the phone that the car has been in an accident and the inner fender well cover has been misaligned. I know for fact it hasn't been in an accident!
I'll probably take it to the dealer to see if a tech can figure it out - but I'm skeptical. Thanks for everyone's input/thinking on this. Strange indeed.... |

Hope you get it sorted. I had a look at mine (fair enough, it’s an F06, but nobody has ever indicated there is a difference on the front axle between F06/12/13) today when washing the beast, and I must say there is significantly more space between the wheel and the fender well cover than in yours... That explains why the same size wheels and same tyres in your car rub but not in mine, but still doesn’t explain the reason...

Can you take a pic dead centre on the front axle with the wheel straight? I’m just thinking it might be physically further forward than it should be?
Or measure center to centre of each wheel? Naturally it should be 2851mm |

The rubbing looks more like what the the point the corner of the sidewall and tread would touch I think.
But a good question I think is does this only happen when turning the wheels, at what angle and both ways, ie can the inside of the drivers side touch when the tyres are at full lock to the left? Or is it just drivers side when turning hard right? |

It definitely is the edge/"corner" of the tire rubbing only on full/sharp turns. Shallow turns cause no rubbing. |
