Front License Plate on M6: No / Yes (Options?)
New Jersey, the state where I live, requires both front and rear license plates on all passenger vehicles, except for vehicles registered as 'historic', that are older than 25 years, which are required to only have one license plate mounted on the rear of the vehicle. All of my cars have rear license plates installed.
I have had my 2014 M6 Coupe since June of 2013 and like many of you, decided that installing a bracket, along with a my license plate on the front of my vehicle would be a major aesthetic blemish on the sleek front design of the car. I have not installed a front license plate on any of our vehicles since 2007 and have never had any problems about this issue with any Police officers in any state that I have traveled. The idea of the awful look, compounded by having to drill either 2 or 4 holes into the plastic front bumper is not appealing to me at all! Well, last week I was finally pulled over by an LEO who asked me where my front license plate is? Specifically, it was a Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) Police Officer who was manning a booth at the Manhattan entrance to the Holland Tunnel that leads to NJ. In what I must assume is a very boring post, he must find something to help pass the time and this issue is one that he probably looks for on many nice vehicles. In any event, he asked to see my paperwork, (Driver's License, Registration and Insurance ID Card), which I provided to him. He asked why I did not have a front license plate. I explained that I was waiting to receive the proper mounting bracket from my BMW Dealer and had the plate in the trunk of the car. I did not share with him that I had not requested that bracket from my Dealer (yet). He came back and said that since I have no infractions and my paperwork was in order that he would give me a warning, but that if he saw me again without a front license plate that he would issue me a ticket. Then, being the smart-ass that I can be, I asked why was he concerned about this since I was in New York City at this location and my car is registered in NJ. He said that PANYNJ Police enforce the traffic laws of both New York and New Jersey. I admit that he is technically correct regarding the law and that I have been lucky so far as to not have had any prior warnings or tickets about this issue. Yet it really does bug me that this is an issue at all. There are 17 states in this country that only require a rear license plate on passenger cars. E-ZPass cameras at most toll booths are positioned at both the front and rear of the toll-charging lane to record the license plate information of all vehicles passing through. Why is it really necessary to have two license plates, rear AND front....??? I have read that temporarily putting the front license plate on top of the dashboard facing out of the windshield is not acceptable, since most states that require front license plates on cars, (not trucks), have dimensional requirements that say it cannot be located more than 18 inches or so above the road level, or language along those lines. I know that there are companies that sell license plate brackets that will screw into the front tow bolt socket so one does not have to drill holes into the plastic front bumper, but it still looks most unfortunate.... What are your thoughts and experiences with this? Have you just bitten the bullet and installed the front plate and try to ignore how bad it looks? Any other folks here who share my aesthetic preference to go without the front plate, even though it is required in your state?

First off, very good looking car. Second, I live in the state of Florida where we do not have this issue. However, the perfect member to chime in on this would be Hunter. I believe he lives in a state that requires a front license plate, and he uses an alternative mounting solution for his front plate. Not only that, but he has what many consider to be the best looking M6 on this forum. I'd be very interested in seeing what he has to add on this topic.

I share your sentiments. Ive never had any issues with port authority police tho. I was having a big issue when i parked on the street (rarely) i would get tickets all day for not having a front plate. That is until i recently had my show and go plate installed and it is seriously one of the best mods you could invest in. Heres a video of my car....not an ///M6 but you get the idea.

Consider yourself lucky
Per NJ -Traffic Laws - Title 39 39:3-33. The owner of an automobile which is driven on the public highways of this State shall display not less than 12 inches nor more than 48 inches from the ground in a horizontal position, and in such a way as not to swing, an identification mark or marks to be furnished by the division; provided, that if two marks are issued they shall be displayed on the front and rear of the vehicle; So even though that show and go plate is slick. you would get fined regardless. so good luck in whatever you decide. |

I use the U.S Millworks tow hitch plate mount. It's solid construction and easily goes on and off. I know it sucks having a plate but it's peace of mind and you don't get harassed about it. Kinda looks sporty too but yes without is the best. Thank you Twitch Massacre for the kind words.

But I think you'd need to cut the mesh a bit, I returned mine.

I saw on U.S. Millworks website that they also make one that's " quick release", assume you can put on/off without tools?

After getting a ticket in NY for No front plate decided to mount it. Didn’t find much information out there so I want to share my solution.
Picked it up from amazon for $84 Sto-N-Sho 2015-2017 BMW M5 -... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06Y43QX4N...p_mob_ap_share Says it’s for the M5 but worked fine on the M6 https://flic.kr/p/2e6M5cd https://flic.kr/p/T4vn9Y https://flic.kr/p/T4vnbS https://flic.kr/p/2f82p1S https://flic.kr/p/T4vne7 https://flic.kr/p/T4vneN https://flic.kr/p/2e6M5yL |

I envy you guys that legally do not need to display a front plate. I like rhe clean front look. No chance of that in UK, or anywhere else in Europe. We now have 15 different types of traffic enforcement cameras operating as cash cows in the UK with most of them now forward facing.
Cars in UK are supplied with a plastic plinth to fix your front plate onto, either with screws or double sided tape. In Europe a plastic frame is more popular. |

As a New Jersey resident, you of all people should know there's not a singe day the state isn't looking to put its boot up your ass. It's all about the money.
That said, there are electronic "flipping" plate mounts. I don't have a link, but I'm sure you can find one on Amazon or elsewhere. So, no plate. One more reason I moved from NJ to PA. ETA: see the M5 video above. It's exactly what I was thinking of. |
