This happened a while ago when BMWNA was doing the M Car Control Clinic. During the morning brief before we got split up into pairs to work with our instructors, one of the instructors asked who owned an M car. Some hands went up. I got paired with this lady that had put her hand up to that question. During the small talk with our instructor, he asked what BMW car we had. She said she had a M235i. I didn't a mental eye roll.

This M over badging hasn't escaped the Motorrad side of the house either. The flagship S1000RR seems to have fallen victim to it over the years. For a while there wasn't much in the way of M packaging. BMW would release limited run special editions of the RR such as the HP4. With the K67 generation, the M package was introduced. I get it. There wasn't an M1000RR....yet. The M package would have specific options that wouldn't be available with base model bikes. The M1000RR was introduced but the M package continued on with the RR. Now, the only specific options that come with the M package are the tri color paint, M seat, and the billet levers/adjustable rearsets. You can get the billet levers/adjustable rearsets as an option upgrade on the base bikes and maybe the M seat. There's nothing too special with the M package now.
But the M235 is actually the M version of the 2 series gran coupe different engine real exhaust etc . Its like you compare 160 180 mercedes witg a35 or a45s
