Lightbulb First Footage of BMW 6 series Gran Coupe Performance Testing on Nurburgring

First Footage of BMW 6 series Gran Coupe Performance Testing on Nurburgring

COMMENTS

We've brought you photos of 6 series Gran Coupe prototypes being put through the paces on the Nurburgring, and we've now caught it on video in live action.

Despite its character as a grand touring car, BMW is still intent on delivering a sporty and well handling Gran Coupe. The continuing testing on the Nurburgring should go far in ensuring that.

Both the 640 and 650 gran coupe models are spotted in this video, with the 650 model wearing 6-series M sport wheels.

Current expectation is for the Gran Coupe to hit showrooms in 2012 as a 2013 Model Year vehicle. Engine range is expected to be identical to the 6-Series Coupe. An M version of the 6 series gran coupe is also in the BMW product pipeline.

If I'd needed rear seats I'd definitely bought a GC. Big, but nice proportions

Setting a goal for the real full blown "M" version of this car.

Maybe it is only me, but 6 Series with 4 doors looks better than with 2 doors. And talking about 4 doors, it looks better than 5 Series and 7 Series and also better than A7 and CLS.

I love almost everything about the 6-Series but the rear. I look at it and I feel it doesn't match or go well with the rest the car.

I thought EVEN numbers were for Coupes?! So does mean they're going to make a 3-series coupe alongside a 4-series coupe and 4 series sedan?!

not that im aware, the 4 series denotes the coupe version of the new 3 series, so they broke up the sedan and coupe and gave them different series numbers.

Yes, the GC certainly messes with BMW's forthcoming numbering convention. Model designations stopped informing engine displacement a long time ago, and now it looks like the new designations will stop informing chassis type even before they've started!

They are. This is a four-door Coupe, or Gran Coupe in BMW parlance. Note that, unlike a BMW sedan, it will seat just four, and it will share most of its styling with the 6 series Coupe.

No. What they are going to do is this:

1 series - hatchbacks of all sorts, including a GT
2 series - coupe, cabriolet, gran coupe

3 series - sedan, touring, GT
4 series - coupe, cabriolet, gran coupe

5 series - sedan, touring, GT
6 series - coupe, cabriolet, gran coupe

7 series - sedans

It's actually fairly straightforward and orthogonal.

Got it. Does make a little more sense when laid out like this. BMW doesn't see any concern with overlap?

There will probably be some cannibalization, but that's life when you are expanding your product portfolio. From a business perspective, the only thing that matters is that they make more money with the new products. We should assume they've done their homework and come up with a solid business case (i.e. one that adds to the bottom line).

GranCoupé would be a more pricey, more sporty, more exclusive, less practical alternative to the larger sedan. I like the GranCoupé thing more than anything. I like the looks of coupés and the practicality of 4 doors. As for sportcars, 2 doors, 2 seats please.

RIP 6 Series! You have now been morphed into a family car. Goodbye aggressive masculine sports car. Sad.
