Battle of the Super Coupe Sedans: M6 Gran Coupe vs RS7 vs CLS63AMG S-Model

Car and Driver compares three of the best performing luxury 'coupe' styled sedans available - the M6 Gran Coupe, Audi RS7 and Mercedes CLS63 AMG S-Model.

On paper, the M6 Gran Coupe starts from the rear position on the grid with the lowest factory power figures and RWD (for acceleration). Its 560 hp / 501 lb-ft were short of the RS7's 568 hp / 516 lb-ft and the CLS63's 585 hp / 590 lb-ft. The RS7 and CLS63's AWD system also give them the 0-60 advantage, in theory.

How did these figures translate to real world performance tests? In a rolling start, the BMW was quickest, covering 5-60 mph in 4 seconds, which was 0.1 seconds faster than the CLS63 and 0.4 seconds faster than the RS7. From a standing start, the M6 GC came in third (at 3.5 sec) for 0-60 mph test at 0.1 seconds slower than the RS7 and 0.3 seconds slower than the CLS63.

As for handling? In a 610-ft slalom, the M6 hit 44.1 MPH compared to the RS7's 41.7 MPH and 42.1 MPH.

Top speed at 190? Did the German automakers come to a new agreement from the 155?

It won based on aesthetics (fit and finish).

The Audi would be the last one I'd buy...

Talk about some big iron. They ripped through the petrol on that trip, must have been fun.

Are 5-60mph tests slower because of launch control?

The Audi wins because of comfort and ergonomics... But the three comparison cars are meant to be harsh luxury cruisers, that are brutally fast. If you want comfort, go for a 650i...

The M6 GC's acceleration numbers were dead impressive for a RWD.

Also look at the chassis and powertrain! BMW won there big time.

Their numbers contradict what they wrote. For example: BMW's steering feel was 10/10, yet the Audi's wasn't even though they say that the Audi's felt better. WTF

Wait...what...the bmw didn't win. Oh...the humanity.

Here is how I would personally shop the cars.

1) CLS63
2) RS7
3) M6 GC

There isn't a turkey in the bunch as they say. But I'm kinda drawn to the RS7 as well. The MB would be my last choice probably.

Recently saw two RS7 safety cars at the WEC event at COTA. It is a beautiful car. It has a very wide looking stance in person. Interior can't be touch by either of the other vehicles in this test.

Yup I find it hard to believe them. Seriously, 0-60 in 3.2s for the CLS? Quite impressive, for all of them actually!

That, plus they liked the way the Audi felt better, and it was faster. What else matters? Sounds like a clear winner to me.

+1. The Audi should have absolutely no CHANCE against the M6 GC and the CLS. Like none at all!

This is B-S!!!
How do you rate "Interior & Exterior" Style based on a 0-10 sacle???
This is a total personal taste issue...I NEVER liked Audi because of its awful interior design!!! And how in the world did Audi's fugly rear design became better than 6's sleek style and design???!!!
And am I understanding that the interior design of Audi rates higher than M6??!!!
How can these 2 be a parameter for rating>>> ?!!!

Agreed. I had an S7 on order and cancelled as I couldn't justify the cash for a car that has very little luxury for that price point. Both S7 and RS7 don't come with full leather or alcantara headliner...way too much plastic! M6 crushes the Audi in interior luxury. Interior of the RS7 is basically the same as a 2.0T A6, except it has nicer seats. The headliner in the M6 GC with that leather swath down the middle has to be the nicest in the industry.

There's no competition here, the RS7 is just the same old Audi exterior with 0 personality.
The CLS is classier and the M6 sportier.

M6 > CLS shooting brake > CLS > RS7.

All three cars are a forced to be reckoned with.

You want overall perf get the m6. You want a highway monster with gobs of torque get the cls.
You want an awd beast get the rs7.
