Charging cables

Just want to ensure I have the right charging cables ready for the delivery of my new iX3.

I have had a Sync-ev wall charger installed which has a type 2 socket (no cable included)

Do UK spec cars come with the required charging cable or do I need to order one separately?

Yep will come with 2 cables

1. a type 2 to type 2 for your wall charger (and public ones)
2. a type 2 to 3 pin plug if you need to charge via a wall socket.

So you're set bud. Enjoy the car.

Thanks. Such a learning curve switching to your first EV.

Do you need to carry the cable with you for public charging? (I assumed most were tethered so the cable BMW supply can just stay connected in my garage)

"Fast" chargers such as the ones at service stations etc will be tethered but slower ones such as the ones at Tesco are invariably untethered and will require a cable.

Plenty of places sell type 2 to type 2 cables if you wanted to keep one attached to your garage

FYI The included type-2 to 3 pin plug cable is very substantial, but only about 6 metres in length, which was too short for my needs - so I’ve purchased a 10 meter version.

The cables come with one roll-top cable bag for convenient storing in the boot.

Pedant alert. EV charging terminology is somewhat confusing. Charging on a ‘granny lead’ is termed SLOW. Charging, up to 43kWs, is normally termed FAST. In both SLOW and FAST charging situations the car’s onboard charger is in control of the charge. Anything in excess of 43kWs is termed RAPID with charging coming from the tethered point. . I have also seen the term ULTRARAPID coming into use for charging above 150kWs.

A word of warning for untethered users. The 3 phase cable supplied by BMW is a lot heavier than the single phase cable required for 7.2kW charging. Over time this can result in ‘wear and tear’ on an EVSE locking pin. The pins in Rolecs are, for example, made from a malleable metal and can bend - locking the plug into the socket.

‘Wear and tear’ is not helped when EV owners fail to follow the correct EVSE connect/disconnect procedures and attempt to pull the cable out from a locked EVSE socket. A trapped cable on public EVSEs has happened to me twice in 7 years.

Fair point with the correction of terminology! I seem to have ended up with 4 categories when planning a journey etc:

1. Granny - 3 pin
2. Home charging from wall box
3. Slow public - Tesco etc at 7/22
4. Fast - she'll, bp pulse etc
