Rear leg room - F06

I gave the whole SUV thing a go, and it's not for me. I'm envious every time I drive a 330i or even a 520i because of that chuckable, RWD feel.

I want to go back to the best all rounder I've ever owned, which is a 6 series, but a coupe just won't work with the kids being bigger now.

I'll go and look at a few GCs over the weekend, but wanted to hear from anyone who went from a coupe to GC, or even better who can compare the rear leg room on X5/X6 with that in a GC.

Issue is not the leg room but can be the sloping rear roof for height

I am 6'5 and cant get in

That's good news - I don't expect the kids to be 6'5" for a while yet 😃

Rear leg room should be fine for anyone under ~6'. Issue would be with the head room and whoever is unlucky enough to be sitting in the center seat. An suv would have more leg room though. Can't speak for the coupe but my GC feels a little more cramped than F10 5 series although the leg room is roughly comparable.

The 4dr GC rear seat legroom is approx 4.5" longer than the 2dr coupe but the rear seats' headroom is probably the 1st thing that could be a negative (if the center position is taken out of contention) for anyone pushing past 6ft tall...or if one's height is proportionally above the waist (like long torso & neck). The sleek sloping roof line takes away the headroom space of the rear passengers whereas in the 5 series or X5...there's a lot more room.

6 series GC:
  • Rear Leg Room 35.3 in
  • Rear Head Room 37.0 in

6 series 2 dr coupe:
  • Rear Seat Leg Room 30.5 in
  • Rear Seat Headroom 35.7 in

The "gentlemen's button on the upper rear of the front seats can be helpful if rear passengers need a bit more leg room to get in/out.

I've got the GC and have the kids in the back all the time. No complaints on leg room.

How old are your kids? The GC rear seats have the head rest built into the seat. On a lot of child seats it gets in the way.

They are 7, but quite tall for their age and not using any child/booster seats. Headroom won't be a problem, and I never go 5 up (we have another SUV for that).

I found a nice 640d but it's a bit far, I will make a trip to see/buy it if the negos go well.

Depends how tall you are, IMO.

I'm 6'2" and I wouldn't say there's a huge legroom in the back from where I have my driving seat positioned. Certainly not as much as the exterior proportions of the car would lead you to believe.

It was way better in the old E70 X5 we had, and the wifes current 530GT has a lot more too.

I went from a coupe 3 series to the 6gc and It was for the fact I need to carry three passengers in the back. Usually have my kids in the back and there are no issues for the journeys we do. Longest stretch we have done is 500 round trip on a weekend. Strangely they usually fight over who gets to sit in the middle seat ?! Maybe because better view out as it sits higher up.

Iím 5í9 and itís actually quite roomy in the back leg wise. But thatís with my seat in my sitting position, and I tend to sit quite forward (not really leaning back).

Yep, I went to test one with kids in tow and exactly this was the problem. There's not much more space behind me than there was in the coupe. My kids could fit, but another adult couldn't.

The difference in length between the Coupe and the GC was added to the rear seat legroom. Your observation is puzzling.

It's pretty simple...legroom in a GC is MUCH more than a 6 coupe. However, the GC legroom is a bit less than a F10/G30 5 series, X5, etc. I went from an F10 to 6GC but my kids are only 4 and 7 so we are good. I've had average sized adults (5'6"-5'11") in back on occasion and they were just fine. I'm only 5'9" but my seat position is relative laid back.

I had a 550i before. When going to the 6GC, the rear seats were concern for me. Until my wife told me that it's way more comfortable in the 6GC than my old 550i. I was shocked, but glad to hear. She's 5'8".

The 6GC's rear seats appear to be a bit more "sculpted" which may account for them feeling more comfortable. Even though the 5 series has more headroom...the f06's rear seat backs & bottoms are not as flat....so once you get your head & legs inside the vehicle...the f06 may be more comfortable for those that "fit".

Good explanation, QSilver! I totally feel the same. The backseat in my dad's f10 feels a bit cramped, but my 6 feels like a cocoon.
