I'm a 90's kid (well...high school kid) & don't understand. So...you lose your eraser?

^Pretty sure that's referring to the cap as a whole, so yes, you're fucked if you lose one of those.

Doooood! It was a mechanical pencil (with the cap on the end in that pic) and each of those little white things was a tiny cartridge with some lead in int. When it got used up, you pulled it out of the tip and pushed it in the bottom of the pencil and it would push the next full lead cartridge forward. If you lost one of them it ruined the whole pencil because the tip would just push into the body whenever you went to write with it.

That's a crappy design. I only used mechanical pencils in high school (91-95). I used the cheap bic .7mm and an assortment of drafting pencils. Each took cartridges that were a couple of inches long and didn't depend on a cap to stay in place.
