Do you know what one looks like - it's a black elongated cone or "spear" 3-4" long. The sensor itself is real easy to replace. It just clips in a hole and has a simple wire connector to it. The instructions say the only preliminary step is to remove the right wheel well lining (passenger side). So if you do that you should be able to see it near the front. I have always meant to look for mine when I'm under there but always forget so I cannot give you the precise location, but it can't be too hard to find once you know what you are looking for.

The outside temperature sensor is an NTC resistor (”NTC” stands for ”Negative Temperature Coefficient”). NTC resistors can convert the ”temperature” value into a ”resistance” value, which can then be evaluated electronically. 1 Outside temperature sensor 2 two‐pin plug connection The ambient (outdoor) temp sensor is B56 in the illustration below (H2 is the horn):

Got it. Right front wheel. I’ve done this many times on others bmw’s that I’ve had. Just wanted to know where to start. Thanks

Mine just failed yesterday, showing the max temp of 122F on the dash. I’m away from home so I have no tools with me. I’d like to get any feedback about replacement before diving in. Thank you! |

From that post by Qsilver7, it should be beside/below the horn on the passenger side. Looking around myself yesterday the horn appears to be just beside and just below the headlight, almost between the headlight and grille, but a little lower. I haven’t had a chance to dig any further though. Maybe it’ll help you find it quicker if you remove the bumper.

Found a DIY for the ambient temp sensor over on the other forum. They posted images...the temp sensor is located in an air duct on the right side (passenger side if you're LHD).
Here's a direct link to that post w/pics: https://www.bimmerfest.com/threads/2...#post-13338635 The temp sensor is hanging down & to the left of the drill bit in this pic:

I just ended up replacing mine a couple days ago. Mine was accessed behind the passenger front wheel liner, but actually installed through the lower splash shield horizontally.
At least that’s the one I replaced. I’ll have to do some more digging and find out what the other one is that I posted a photo of previously. Not the best photo, but hope this helps someone else! |
