New 640d GC owner, not the first post I was expecting!
New owner here and oh my the 6 is a beautiful car. UK based here and upgrading from an Audi A6 to a '16 GC in sapphire black. World's apart! I always join forums associated with my cars, but wasn't expecting my first post to be like this, 5 days into ownership.
I didn't purchase from a main dealer, but a dealer nonetheless. Car was faultless on the drive home from t'North to Cambridgeshire, although I suspect that I may need to get all 4 corners rebalanced. Alas, she's now dumping coolant and had to limp home yesterday. Dealer has been super supportive thus far, because unless I get any red flags or a bill, I really do intend to keep the car and not return as faulty goods. I'd read on the EGR issues, but know that's a relatively common issue with the modern diesel. This vehicle doesn't seem to have had the recall acted upon, but from my estimations it's been sitting for a good year not being used at all as the mileage and MOTs show next to no usage. That or someone was savvy with their 'mileage fairy'. Also, the leak is really obvious as there is coolant all over the engine bay but seems to be coming from the right hand side of the engine block (UK passengers side) visible. When the engine cover is removed. Before I get her booked in, anything else common I need to be concerned with? Egr recall is one thing, but I'd rather tempt a specialist than get the EGR sorted only to find something else not covered creep in. |

Hello J87H
Welcome to this great forum. I am also a recent member of this forum. I also have the 640d. I bought it from an unofficial dealer. I have 12000 miles the car is perfect. I do not know how the previous owner treated my car, but it seems that he took good care of it. Most cars in these ranges are very well cared for by their owners. One of the problems that the diesel engine has is precisely the EGR valve. Contrary to what many may think ... a diesel engine, once hot, likes to be driven to rpm medium high ... the engine breathes better, and the EGR valve does not get dirty. But most diesel engine owners run the engine at low revs with the longest possible gear ratio ... to save fuel ... but an EGR Valve nightmare. The EGR valve is usually the most common problem of diesel engines that do many km in the city ... You have to take the cars out to the open road sometimes, and take it high for a few miles. My unit, had the engine somewhat asleep the first weeks ... But after a few weeks using it in sport mode and doing miles, now it goes smoothly ... more energetic, and with the engine more loose ... I assumed I had the EGR Valve somewhat dirty ... and I decided to decarbonize it enjoying the driving. But sometimes the EGR Valve is so dirty that it is not recoverable with high rpm sport driving for a while. Anyway, this is all just talking, because we do not know if what happens to your engine is the EGR valve ... I was only commenting on this because it is a common problem in diesel engines that have been used at low rpm for many miles, or they have done most of their city miles on short trips. I wish that the problem that your unit has solved it for you soon ... the BMW diesel engine is really reliable ... There are many BMWs in Europe with Diesel engines, with an authentic barbarity of miles. |
