F Platform Depreciation

Hello Fellas!

What's the depreciation like on the F06 platform? Seems like what I owe compared to KBB is wide spread.

I know cars always depreciate and not really an asset, just trying to see what others are experiencing.

I imagine most everyone is experiencing what you are experiencing. There is some regional variation in deprecation/pricing, but it's not a huge factor in the overall picture. Probably the best way to get an idea is simply to survey asking prices on CarGurus or a similar site. Cars in this market segment have some of the steepest depreciation. They have a relatively limited following to begin with, and few people who can truly afford one are going to buy one out of warranty. So the market is somewhat limited by the time these get to be 3-4 years old. My rule of thumb is that by 3 years (or even less) they are selling for about 50% of sticker (at least F12 convertibles are - I imagine the GC is not too much different). I can afford a new one, but I always buy cars in that spot where they are selling for half price with only 20k miles and have a year of warranty left, or more if CPO. Being able to say I bought it new is not worth $60,000 to me (which is almost exactly how much below sticker I got my 2015 for).

CPO is the way to go...I'm done buying brand new vehicles even if I can afford to do it.

I just bought my 2015 650i GC with 32,500 miles. Original warranty until March of 2019 and then CPO for a year after that. I paid $47,500 and the sticker 3 years ago was $103,000. Over 50% off.

Ok... so I bought mine in September 2017 it's a 2014 CPO 34k miles for $41k. Sticker price was $89k. So inline with what everyone else is saying. It's 640i GC msport.

One more CPO here, sticker $89k bought it 3 years old and 34k miles for $41.5. Too bad cpo is no longer 2 additional years. BMW really screwed up that one.

This is not the car for someone who is worried about depreciation.

I believe my 2012 F13 320d cost brand new £70k in the UK, and I purchased it for £15.5k recently.

This is the case for all cars in this segment, say Mercedes S class sees similar depreciation. There is a lot less demand in the used market, they stay on sale for a long time - here in the UK a lot of people don't have the space to keep it as it is a large car, it is high maintenance in terms of insurance and fuel compared to smaller BMWs. on my 640d, it is a higher insurance group than my Porsche 911 to give you an idea.

Speaking about my Porsche, I purchased that used three years ago and sold it pretty much the same price, so almost no depreciation, in fact I sold it cheap, most were selling for more than I paid for it three years ago. But that is different.

As someone said about 3 years depreciating half it's value is roughly a good way to see it. At the bottom end it kind of stagnates, which is where I came in.

If you buy new, you have to be prepared to stomach the depreciation.

Yeah, the depreciation curve is way way steeper up front. I had an MB convertible that had a sticker of $74k. I bought it at 2.5 years old for $35k. I kept it 7.5 years and sold it for $14.5k. So the original owner's annual depreciation was $15,500 and mine was $2,700.

50% depreciation from a new car price is not unusual for a luxury car or a large sports car.

What you should be also concerned about is the depreciation after the 3 years. For the 6-series, it's not going to look good at all. Just look at any E63 model 640 of 650 and you'll get a glimpse of what your car would look like of the same vintage years down the road.

Only certain models will retain value for a while at the 6-10 year mark. M cars are a good example. A E63 M6 will hold value at the $26-$30k mark with pricing largely driven by condition and mileage. A 650i of the same vintage and mileage will be in the $12-$15k mark. In 3-5 more years, the 650s in this case will cease to exist (junked), and the M6 will continue to hold value at the mid-$20s to high teens.

The best experience I've had is owning my 08 E90 M3. I bought the car used for $46k and sold it for $28k after driving 60k miles over 8 years. That's $190/month of depreciation...or akin to a lease of a $30k car.

Perhaps the depreciation on the F 6 series platform will not be as bad as the E6X one?
Demand might be higher on the F series, as it's not as hideous or ugly as the E series.
Plus gran coupe also has a higher demand.

The original owner's depreciation hit is a big factor in my buying decision because it's money in the bank for me up front. My own depreciation hit is no factor at all in my decision. Whether it's worth $10k or $20k in 5 years has a real impact on my ownership cost - or my "price" - but I did not buy it to "make" that $10k on my investment. I bought it to drive it, and am just happy I have a nearly new car with a $115,850 sticker that I can drive for only $58,400.

don't count on it. Maybe the GC will hold a bit better value, but we're not talking about anything over $10k of value.

One of the reasons I bought a M6 GC is because of resale. I think the GC will be easier to sell at my asking price with no pricing concessions than a coupe or a convertible in 6 years...
