Got my new carbon fiber steering wheel

Hello everyone, just an update to my list of mods. I designed my own carbon fiber steering wheel with carbon fiber top and bottom, alcantara grips, dark blue stitching and satin black centre trim and had it custom made. Will post update pics once installed on Friday. Here is the wheel for now. hope you all like it

Looks great. How do you achieve something like that? Order from website or someone local take stock steering wheel and customize it? Approx cost?

It's a custom modification. I know of a shop in my area that does this. It requires cutting the wheel and inserting the carbon and alcantara pieces (depending on if you start with a stock leather wheel). They also offer a flat bottom section too. Everything is customizable, the alcantara, where the carbon is, even the color of the center stripe if you so choose.

let me know if you're interested I can put you in touch with him. It won't be cheap. About $700 or so, and for 6 and 5 series there may be some down time as he needs a core exchange

Thanks for the info! Definitely not something that I can entertain right now but I may bump this thread in the future to get that information. I actually think that price for that good-looking of a steering wheel is quite reasonable!

anything that involves cutting of the steering wheel could effect safety in the event of a crash. How thick is the carbon fiber inserts? could they crack and break in a collision? do you want shards of carbon fiber in the cockpit, potentially being forced at you by the airbag?

While I agree it looks great, there is more to consider.

Who cares? We should feel lucky to be impaled by carbon

Thank you everyone for the kind compliments! I have already installed the wheel and will post up pictures soon. The wheel looks amazing, such a nice touch to the interior. My only complaint is that the grips are not bolstered thick enough to match oem m performance wheels. I will keep working on the designs and try out new things to come in the future.

As for what Flying Ace said, I think he meant cutting as in opening up the stitching of the original leather and replacing it with layering carbon and alcantara. No, my steering wheel frame did not get cut, it is still one round solid piece. Besides, being impaled with carbon fiber would indeed be a delight cheers

Would this be possible on the other M-style steering wheel? Because if so, I'd be interested down the line. Thanks.

The base wheel has to be for the 6-series. Everything else is customizable

looking good!

I think having a steering wheel (and other interior trim) that you like and enjoy is very important. It's the one thing you see and touch every time you're driving the car. It's all cosmetics, but it makes a big difference in your enjoyment of the car.

That's correct, most of the modification requires cutting and stitching/layering the materials only. The metal frame of the wheel would not get touched. However, my local vendor creates flat sections of the wheel as well as an option, and there's not way to do that without cutting the steel frame.

Anyways, an accident shouldn't be of any concern. Your airbag should deploy well before your face hits the wheel.

If anyone is interested here's the shop:

Flying Ace wow!!! that looks amazing! I would live the thicker grips. But I think the square shape would be a tad bit too much for a non m car
