Those who have went 640d, 640i, 650 to M6
Seriously considering making the change,
couple questions, its number 1 that mainly worries me 1.) does it feel like a new car? worried i will look at it in 6 months and think meh 2.) how many miles to the tank are you getting on average mixed driving, currently in the 640d i get around 390-400 (its not a deciding factor just interested to know) 3.) other than the power is there anything else that you notice different its either M6 in the next 6-12 months for 3 year or 850 in the next 24 months for 3 year cheers

not quite the same thing, but I went from an m550d (remapped to 400+ bhp) to a 650 gran coupe (also remapped).
Despite the fact that the diesel is also very powerful, the whole sensation of the twin turbo V8 makes for a totally different driving experience. It puts a smile on my face every day. It is not all good news though, the V8 needs significanty more attention than the very robust inline 6 diesel. It is also way more thirsty. I average 15 liters / 100 km. |

Well, I went from a 645 to an M6, both verts. Bought 2014 M6 secondhand in Feb 2016, and have to say it puts a smile on my face every time I go out in it! Yes, it does still feel like a new (secondhand) car to me. Mine's completely bog standard, but the exhaust note is quite different from the 645 - sound is awesome!
I get 350 to 400 miles per tank for mixed driving. If you do a lot of town driving or continually boot it, that will drop the mpg significantly. So yes, in those circumstances it could be classed as thirsty. The M suspension makes the car marginally stiffer than the 645, but I have done 250 mile + journeys and felt fresh and relaxed at the other end. As an M car, it will naturally draw more attention, and you may find your insurance increases over a 640 for example. Not sure I entirely agree with Rexpontius comment. Mine has over 31000 miles on the clock, and has not needed any attention other than normal servicing. Go for the M6 - you might regret it if you don't! |

Did not mean that the V8 is unreliable (well the regular N63 of course is notoriously unreliable), but with a diesel you dont have to deal with spark plugs, ignition coils, turbo cooler lines, brittle intake tubes, to name a few things. |

With all turbo cars, there are leaks to coolant and oil lines to deal with. Both my X5 35d and M6 leaked oil and coolant. My X5 has had 2 fixes for oil leaks already and it's still leaking!

Yes, it will feel like a new car!
I moved from an Audi RS4 (purchased new) after 2.5 years to a F13 - felt like a new car, all the way until I swapped it for a F06 a year and a half later. This was 15 mths ago - and it still feels like a new car! I was considering a 650i (F13) originally, and the real reason to buy a M6 instead was that the 650i is a very nice and capable car, but just that compared to a M6... M6 is special, in so many ways, compared a normal car. That keeps it new and fresh for a very long time. Yes, the fuel consumption is up there, if you drive it like a mad man, and in the city - less than 400 km (250 mls) wouldn’t be a surprise, but then again, drive it in normal traffic for longer distances, and I have seen 800 km out of a tank... With 600 hp you can dry a tank pretty fast, if that’s the way you use a car, but keep doing that and 600 hp will also send you to jail pretty quickly... Lastly, if it’s F06 you are after, I’m still of an opinion that it looks sexier than the new 8-series GranCoupe... Based on renderings, the M treatment improves the standard 8-series, but fundamentally the proportions make it look “fat” compared to F06... So, my money would still go to M6 F06, even if I could reconsider now having seen the new model... |

Thanks for the replies, it's the F06 I would be going for. I'm known to have the odd flutter of the loud pedal but my lead foot days are gone (well almost) in all honesty the current is fine and no slouch but I'm seriously missing the drama of a powerful car.
Allot to think on over the next few months, thanks guys |

The proportion likely is due to the 8 looking a bit fat on the rear quarter and has much larger openings. There's a lot of curves on the new 8 whereas the 6 is much more streamlined design. I'll reserve my judgement on the M8 GC until we see it. I think the M8 coupe looks perfect. Last edited by Flying Ace; 07-02-2019 at 10:20 AM.. |

Had a brief glimpse the other day of the M850i convertible. Looks very promising. I'm told BMW are ditching tintop verts in favour of ragtops now.

I went from an F13 650 to an F06 M6 and it does feel like a different car. The power and suspension are not anywhere near the same and my 650 was on H&R springs, tuned, etc. The M6/M5 are just different animals compared to the non-M versions. Like comparing a 440i to an M4, there is no comparison.

2013 650i GC Deep Sea Blue/Ivory (M-Sport, exec pack, other things I can't remember) -> 2014 M6 GC Frozen Silver/Canyon Brown (comp pack, CCB, exec pack)
1.) does it feel like a new car? worried i will look at it in 6 months and think meh While it's not as dramatic as jumping from my daily Xterra Pro-4X to the M6, everything is a bit edgier in the M6 as you might expect. the 650i was fast, M6 faster still of course. I don't recall the 650i having something similar to the M modes, but I'm getting old and forget what I did 2 hours go - but the modes really add another level of adjust-ability. 2.) how many miles to the tank are you getting on average mixed driving, currently in the 640d i get around 390-400 (its not a deciding factor just interested to know) No clue, never bothered to measure or look at a trip computer (im sure there is one), but i would be surprised if it was above 20mpg average. 3.) other than the power is there anything else that you notice different The M modes particularly; you can go from (somewhat) soft to edgy at a press of the button. I do miss my glass sunroof in the 650i though. Just get the M - i regret I didn't the first time around. Put everything in Sport Plus and you'll forget about miles/gallon, or any other sensibility lol. Plus, the regular 6 series simply look like a 9/10s M6 lol. |
