Reliability and repair costs after 60k miles?

My 2014 650 just passed the 60k mile mark and my CPO expires Feb 2020. The car has been reliable to date but I am concerned going forward how well the N63 will do. I would like to keep this car another couple of years but I am worried about potential repair bills. I am currently shopping 3rd party extended warranties/VSPs which tend to run just shy of $5k for 2 years. I'm not sure if it's worth it. Do you all have any examples of repairs/problems you have incurred on your 650s and also how much have those repairs costed you?

Second question...do you have any recommendations for 3rd party extended warranties? BMW will only go 1 additional year on my car for around $5k. I am in CA, where most warranty/VSP companies will not sell directly to the customer so I have to go thru a dealer.

My CPO expires this Sunday. I'm only at 35k miles, but I literally would not buy an extended warranty if it was $1,000. $5,000 is comical. I don't buy them ever. Have not regretted it yet. If you have $5k to spend on a warranty, put it someplace where it will earn some interest and use it if you need it. The odds of a repair greater than $5,000 in 2 years is not large.

my 2013 650 CPO ran out almost a yr ago. I hate extended warranties, but reading about all the drive train malfunction stuff, engine troubles & transfer case problems really made me pull the trigger since we wanted to keep the car at least another 3 yr. Mine has 31K mi right now and other than replacing a fuel tank vent valve, no issues.

So got 3yr or 30K mi. extended thru my BMW dealer using Allstate Protection plan. $4100. I always read that 3rd party companies really screw you if you have a claim and find some out clause to not pay, but I felt buying thru the dealer gives me some clout. We shall see. At about $110 per month, I'm Ok with having something.

I blew out my rear diff and drive shaft and now im looking at a fuel pump and injectors. important note - the second half has been covered by a special bmw extension after a class action lawsuit. I have to cover the $200 tow and replace the tire and wheel that were destroyed when I pulled off when the car died. My biggest worry after the engine is the top. I got one fault for that but it self healed somehow. Warranties are generally best avoided if you can afford to self insure. You will save money on whole. What it does buy you is peace of mind. So if it is worth it to you to have peace of mind go for it. The money usually doesn't work out - makes sense when you think of it.

I bought a 3.5 year, 90,000 mile, BMW extended comprehensive warranty in November, 2018 for my pre-owned 2015 650xi GC and it cost me $5,400, which I felt was a reasonable amount for this length of time and mileage, covering most everything on the car.

I have an extended warranty up to 100k and I just hit 79k, and i noticed white smoke coming from engine and tailpipes indicative of an oil leak. Dropped car off at Bimmer Performance Center in NC and they found about 6 oil leaks and some coolant leaks. I asked if my spirited driving contributed to this and while he assured he that it was minor influence and that these engines generate a lot if heat contributing to the destruction of seals over time. I will know shortly how good my extended warranty is and what they will cover...

On fifth of the way in to your warranty period, how much has it paid out?

I have had the car only 7 months and it has not paid out anything yet.

However, $1,800 a year is not a lot for peace of mind, knowing that it does not take much to go wrong in 3 1/2 years on a 4 plus year old BMW 650 to quickly add up to $5,400.

I agree with you to an extent. One of my options is "self-insuring" and just keep the money in a CD and HOPE nothing happens to the car. But the thing is any amount of research will tell you that things can and do go wrong with the V8s...especially after 60k miles. The warranty companies know this as well, hence the high prices. I know the N63TU is better than the N63 but thank goodness I had a warranty on my 2011 550i. Kept getting drivetrain malfunction messages shortly after 60k. After 3 trips to the dealership, the problem was finally fixed by replacing all the ignition coils under warranty

Thanks for info. The price you got sounds about right considering you're at a lot lower mileage than my car. I've been doing some research and have heard some of the same horror stories about 3rd parties. At least Allstate is a reputable company.

Who is your extended warranty with? On a side note, your car is legit. I just saw your latest post with videos...One of the sweetest 6's on the forum. I hit you up a while on IG about your front lip...thx for the info.

True, the price is driven by the potential high cost and relatively higher risk of repair. But they are still priced knowing that they will make a ton of money. They are priced so they win. Not on every car, but most cars. But I don't view it as a single-transaction decision. I never buy extended warranties on anything, so even if I end up losing on one particular car, I'm still waaaay ahead. But I have not lost yet.

Ha!! No doubt man I appreciate it! I am not sure I don’t have the paperwork with home in a drawer in Dallas and I am currently at Bimmer Performance in North Carolina... if you are in the NC Raleigh area I definitely recommend anyone hit them up as an additional option to the dealer.

I, for one, found $3500 for an additional 50k miles to cover EVERYTHING (even electronics) on an Exclusionary policy to be quite reasonable compared to the cost of a blown turbo or differential. There's nothing cheap on these cars, and even a relatively small mechanical repair can run into thousands.

Opie's logic is sound here.

You're essentially playing the house. If the actuaries and underwriters are doing their job right, they'll win - they NEED to in order to be in business. So, on most warranties, they'll profit. On some, they'll lose.

I've owned a few of my BMWs over the years for fairly high mileage - 90k to 125k miles. They've had some problems, but nothing detrimental. That said, I've always been the original owner, treated them well (not abused, preventative maintenance, etc.), and largely drove them in preferable conditions (e.g. highways and suburbs - not cities).

The V8s, however, are another story - they've never been BMWs bread and butter, and like most higher end models, the repair costs get significantly larger.

My 650 is about two years old now and has about 8k miles on it. I've considered keeping it longer term (as there's nothing in BMW's line-up that's luring me right now), but I expect, unless things go terribly wrong, it won't be too expensive if I keep it outside of warranty given the low mileage I put on it. And, if it gets expensive, so be it - I may just sell it then. So, I'll likely forego any extended warranty as I've done with all others in the past.

At 60k miles and 5 - 6 years old, you're certainly into the "zone" where bigger things can start going wrong. I wouldn't pay $5k for a year of coverage, though. $5k for 3 or 4 years? That starts to make some sense.

You are right in many regards. Obviously, any warranty/insurance company is in business to make money. In the big picture, they always win. Generally I wouldn't recommend an extended warranty at these prices. However, when you look at my scenario closer, a warranty can make sense. I still absolutely love the car. But...I do have the V8 as you've mentioned...and I have already experienced the V8 issues first hand with my 550. Ultimately I wouldn't mind spending around $4k for the add'l couple of years that I would like to keep this one. My fear is self insuring (which technically I can afford to do) cause an $8-10k repair is really going to hurt my heart! Also, human nature is when you are paying out of pocket for repairs, we start to ask questions like, "what do I absolutely have to fix right now." Or we start looking for less convenient independent shops (harder to locate, no loaner service, cars often sit outside, etc.). That being said, can anyone give some insight into some of the expenditures they've incurred?

What were the signs that it was going bad or did it just stop working all together? I can hear a low hum going on and off and I think it is the transfer case as it sounds like it is coming from the middle of the car.
