Road debris!

My beautiful 640i was hit yesterday by road debris. It scratched the front bumper cowl and the hood. Is this a comprehensive claim?

Not even worth a claim. That will buff out easily at least from what I can see. Doesn't look deep...

Agree...often called paint transfer. Take a terry cloth and water and run it over it using some elbow grease. See what happens. I bet you reduce it considerably...

That looks like more than paint transfer. But still, have somebody with a buffer try and get most of it out. Or you may have to wet sand it before buffing. But if the scratches are too deep, repaint is the only option.

That is exactly what I thought. I tried buffing but the grooves go too deep.

Try to polish it out, if the scrapes took the paint down to the primer or metal it may be time to call Dr. Colorchip. Your deductible will probably be as much as it'll cost to get it fixed then you'll have a claim on your insurance and a reason for them to raise your rates. Save the claim for something more substantial.

Thanks! I’ll check it out. Dr. Colorchip? I tried rubbing it out, but it’s definitely scratched through the clear and into the color.

What did you try rubbing it with? Dr. Colorchip is just a kind of touch up paint you sort of rub in. It will look much better from 5 feet away, but not great, and the scratches will fill with wax and look white. I'd still find somebody who knows what they are doing to to wet sand it to remove all the scratches that are not that deep. If you end up with a third the number of scratches you have now, and much shallower, it will look even better if you put touch up paint on it.

I used Maguire’s Ultimate rubbing compound, and then my detail guy tried to work his magic, but these are deep scratches. I put in a claim. I’ll see what they say and then explore my options. The area is small, but the car is still new to me and that’s all I see when I look at it. I’ll ask about the wet sanding, but I fear that there will be paint...

Thanks for you input!

Yeah, it just depends on what level of perfection you are looking for. For a car you just got, I know that drives you nuts. I'm sure I'd bite the bullet and get it painted. But wet sanding, if you know what you are doing, can be a miracle even on clear coat scratches you can easily catch your fingernail in, so long as they are not to the paint. My car was perfect except behind the gas cap it looked like a lion scratched it - a bunch of deep clear coat scratches in an area about the size of softball. All were deep enough to easily catch my fingernail. I used a small hard foam sanding block and used 800, 1200, 1500, 2000 and 2500 grit paper in that order. By the time you get to 2500, the paint starts to have a satin sheen and it buffs out easily with a Porter Cable DA buffer and foam pad using Meguires M105. My scratches are absolutely 100% gone. I can tell some of yours are too deep and are through the clear coat, but I bet they would be 80% gone with the above method.

This is why you should have protected your baby with PPF, at least partial front. Would have totally protected you and resulted in zero paint damage. All at a price that is probably the same or lower than your insurance deductible and repainting.

Kind of what I was getting at was that at least Dr. Colorchip will put color on the scratches that went through the paint - it won't make them disappear, but they won't be as noticeable from a distance. That may be good enough for you, but if you're anal like me I'd have the front professionally repaired.

PPF= Paint Protection Film (YES)

PPF = clear wrapping vinyl (NO)!

Vinyl wrapping is very thin and used for color changing, not protection. Vinyl would have not helped OP in this situation. Typical partial front PPF would have protected him probably 100% here. That's the cheapest $500-800 insurance ever. Given OP's enthusiasm when he bought the car recently, it is sad to see the damage so soon. OP, not too late to get PPF to prevent future damage. Go with full front to be safe. Only a little more expensive than partial front.

Road Debris Repair Update

The car is in the shop and the total repair is over $5000.00, almost $3,000.00 of which is for a new left front headlamp assembly (LED, active, etc.). I should get her back by the end of next week. I sure am glad I filed a claim.

I was also thinking of getting a ceramic coating applied to the car, but the fact is that I enjoy waxing the car myself.

Happy Motoring!

Since it appears you have a front plate, you ought to ask them how much to spray the black plate mount since they are getting paint anyway. I painted mine. Looks better body color.
