2019 BMW 640i

Hello everyone,

This is my first post on this site and thank you in advance for your input, comments and help.

I purchased a new 2019 640i last week and this car does not have a rear camera ( I know I am so surprised myself). Is it possible to have a factory rear camera installed? would it have all the wiring that are needed to install the camera? How hard would it be to install the camera?

Really? Have you physically looked for it by lifting up the BMW logo you pull on to open the trunk and actually looking under there for the lens?

Yes I have and they never had one installed on this car. It is strange but it is true.

The james bond style rear camera is one of my fav features.

I have only seen ugly fixed cameras on other bmw models even newer ones - wonder why they dropped it?

Best of luck getting it retrofitted - its well worth it!

What is the James Bond style camera? I still hope I can install the BMW part on this car if possible. I called my local dealer and the parts are around $600. I need to ask my service advisor and see if they can tell me if all the wiring are there or not.

Any other ideas??

I just call it that - as the BMW badge flips open like it's about to open fire.

meh...I wouldn't say the rear camera is very important. The ultrasonic parking sensors does the job better. The camera doesn't give you a sense of true distance from the object and you'll rely on the colors of the parking sensor picture anyways.

I feel like if you're going to retrofit a camera, the top view cameras are more important. It's the only way to help you fit into a tight parking spot.

Yup. honestly pdc and my tilted passenger side mirror work better than the camera does. But I never use the camera since the top view is amazing.

Also, Devilish, you absolutely sure you don't have a camera? Looking at the 2019 pricing guides, the camera is standard in the US

Yes I am positive. I tilted the BMW logo and double checked it. I heard they ran out out cameras in the last few patch of of 640 and they just shipped them without the cameras. I found another one that another dealer in my area was selling and immediately I was told by the sales person that the car didn't have a rear camera and I walked away from it.

I assume I cant even install a top viewer on this car. Any idea?

No top view either? This are cameras on the bottom of your rear view mirrors.

You can probably retrofit a top view camera. But it may require the rear camera to be fitted too. The screen that shows top view also shows the rear camera view (from the top angle)

So it does not have the top view cameras on the bottom of the rear view mirrors either? Does it have the button on the center console to turn on the top view? Do you have the side view cameras in the front wheel arches? If you walked from one car because of no camera, why did you not walk from this one? And if it was not disclosed to you that the car was missing standard equipment, I think you should make them add it for free, or you have grounds to return it.

Wow...I didn't know that. So, this means every new car sold in the US market will require a screen or an electronic rear view mirror so that the federally mandated rear view camera has a display?

correct. Most manufacturers have made it standard with the 2017 models.

I'm curious why this particular 2019 BMW model does have it. I would actually complain to BMWUSA, point to the law and see if they'll retrofit one for free.

I will call BMW directly and see what they say. I am so use to rear camera that it bothers me every time I put my car in reverse. I will try to upload pictures for you all to see.
