Harsh/Stiff Ride Solved
I bought a new 2018 640ix Jan 2019 delivered to my dealer in the midwest from NJ. Previously drove SUVs my whole life. Took delivery and was shocked by the stiff and uncomfortable ride (like a 1984 Jeep Wrangler with over-inflated tires). The 2016 650i that I test drove did not feel that way, but I chalked it up to the factory runflats and lack of e-dampers on mine. Complained to the dealer and they suggested that I replace the runflats. I did after 1,500k uncomfortable miles with some improvement. But it was still harsh and I regretted buying the car. Sadly, I would choose to drive my 2010 4 Runner if the trip involved average to below average roads instead of my beautiful new 6 series.
After 9k miles a creak sound started coming from the rear suspension. Dealer found the nearly destroyed TRANSIT SUSPENSION BLOCKS on the shock! The NJ dealer did not remove one set of blocks. What a difference. Finally I love the car. If your new ride is surprisingly harsh check the suspension blocks. Apparently this happens often. Which is unbelievable. Smooth Roads Ahead! |

...glad you found the issue...I've heard of this before.
In case anyone is curious as to what they look like...see pics below. They usually aren't that difficult to see if you're having this issue and look up into the suspension. {2012} {2017}

Seriously - I signed 4 copies of this document - one via e-mail and 3 more in person. It was extreme. The gist of it was, "Non Run-Flat Tires don't work when they're punctured. Don't try to drive on them, and don't blame us." It's sad that we actually need to tell people this... and I suppose I can't blame the dealership considering most businesses won't go out of their way to create unnecessary paperwork unless there's truly a risk, in this case, they're trying to mitigate.

Proper pre-delivery inspections are a thing of the distant past, even at dealerships. It's a rarity you get a vehicle with the correct tire pressures, let alone a full tank of gas. My favorite was a 2001 Tahoe that was sold new to me with the front alignment off in just about every direction. Most recent was a CPO GLC for my wife that we collected with 44 PSI in all the tires. Dumbasses.

Next thing you know, they'll have you sign for every advanced safety option you don't opt into. "You need to check blind spots and stop the car yourself, BMW takes no responsibility." Which...actually may need to be pointed out to the generation learning to drive in cars with these features.
Unfortunately in my experience, once the business gets big enough, they seem to go out of their way to create as much paperwork as possible for little to no benefit lol |
