Brake pad replacement
The car is telling me it is time for a rear brake pad replacement, so do I replace just the pads or do I have to replace the discs as well (when I was in the garage about 2 months ago, they also told me I had a few months left on my pads but said my discs were good; I have 51,000 miles on the car).
The reason I am asking this question is that a few years back, I replaced just the pads on my 4 series GC and the brakes squealed from that point forward, and I was told by the garage that changed them that you must change the discs as well when replacing pads as squealing will most likely happen if you do not change them both at the same time. Is that correct or was the garage trying to do unnecessary work? Thanks |

The only way to tell is to measure the rotors. 24mm when brand new, and 22,4 mm minimum thickness. (EU Version- not sure if US is the same)
Use a caliper tool to take the measures. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Steel-Co...0902/301118028 |

They may have squealed because of debris between the disk and pad. I changed the pads all round on my 6er this year and they are quiet. Just make sure to clean everything thoroughly with brake cleaner prior to assembly and apply the anti squeal paste as per BMWs directions (check the newtis.com site). The rear pads are in floating caliper so it's not a particularly challenging DIY.
Also note that the electronic park brake needs to be put into service mode before attempting changing the pads. Easy to do with software tools, a little more challenging without. |

Sure. The electronic parking brake uses the rear brakes to function. It does this by compressing and releasing the brake pads when actuated.
In order to change the pads you need to fully retract the electronic park brake. This is easily done through software like Autologic or Rheingold/ISTA or manually by disassembling the actuator housing on the caliper. Here's a video on the latter: https://youtu.be/Ljq4ATPorXM |
