new BMW design language, beaver teeth... what do you think?
Hi Forum members, hope all are well.
I've been wondering for sometime now about BMW's current 'design language' and will it age well or is it destined to be as unpopular as when Chris Bangle tore up the broadsheet in early 00's and gave us the very unpopular 'bangle butt' designs.... I will say I absolutely dislike the ridiculous kidney treatment these days... they are too large and give the front of the cars a beaver toothed look which is, in my opinion, ungainly and not aesthetically pleasing. I'm talking the 7,8 and X5 series of cars etc etc. Side profiles seem nice and the rear lighting arrangements are growing on me. When I first saw the 8 series I was NOT a fan. However as it ages and we become more used to it I think its quite an interesting design with some very nice aspects to it. I'm incredibly biased towards our 6 series though, short of some unforeseen occurrence i don't plan on selling my 650 Coupe. I think its about the best looking BMW coupe built in 30 years and there isn't a bad angle on it. I had the rare pleasure to drive a mates wonderful 86' 635Csi a few weeks ago, he was behind me in my 650 and the front of our cars in a rear vision mirror are divine if not a tad sinister! To this days after years of happy motoring with my F13 650 I still look back at it as I leave the car.... I'm not sure the new design language has this swooning effect yet.... what do you all think? will the bucky beaver teeth settle on us and we will look to buy into this generation of cars ...? |

I'm lucky enough to have two cars that put a smile on my face every time I walk up to them. MY C7 Corvette and my 650ix coupe. The coupe is the prettiest BMW ever made.
I hate the new look and will never buy one. |

I’m not a fan of the new kidney grille designs…nor do I like the exaggerated rear end designs with the fake vents and/or exhausts. And many of the rear tail light designs appear to be homogeneous with other marques and I can’t tell them apart from many Asian brands. I confuse the new BMW SUVs/SAVs rear tail lights with many of the Asian SUVs. Even the original iconic round angel eye HALOs and the latter CORONA ring headlight designs have morphed into the design of other marques. The once BMW roundish halo/corona rings are now more like hockey sticks. And why get rid of the C pillar’s Hoffmeister kink?
Those of us that don’t care for the design will either have to wait it out (like I did with the Bangle-butt era) or move on to something else if we can’t hold on to what we have.

Design wise they simply managed to screw about every icon, like dropping the Hofmeister kink, the side lines tend to have no finesse or direction, so they didn’t stop making the front as close as to a pig face, but dropped a C pillar that give BMW's a sporty design, now they look like Toyota's no DNA.

I used to HATE the 8 GC and the beaver teeth and the huge 7 series grills. Now I find the 8 GC to be beautiful. And I find the 4 series beaver teeth wonderfully aggressive, especially if the license is mounted off-center… The 7 too.
Also, when you see them you KNOW that they are new cars. Don’t get me wrong, I still think the 6 GC is one of the most beautiful cars ever built, but I would not be averse to driving an M850 GC. |

@Frupal with you on 8 GC. Still think 8 coupe looks way better, and 8 GC does not come close to 6 GC design wise.
4 though? It's a no for me. Too cheesy. It's like some cheap Japanese car and a Mustang had a baby. |

The rear end reminds me of dog jowls...I don't get all the indentations and cut-outs (are those real air vents?) :

hahahah that's so right! I think Walt put it best the 6 series coupe is the prettiest coupe design in years from BMW. Ill add that it has some 'muscular menace' that makes it quite a sight on the road. Unlike the 8 ( which I have to say is growing on me...) there is not a bad angle on the 6. |

I'll be honest, I am not a fan of BMW's new/current design language as of 2018-present. The only models in the current lineup that I like design wise are the X6 (particularly with the M-sport package) and the current 5 series, though I will say it took a while for it to grow on me, and I think the previous f10 looked a bit more handsome/muscular from certain angles. The refresh/LCI version of the 5 does look pretty good compared to when it was first released a few years ago.
Interior wise, BMW has improved in some areas in my opinion; albeit I see they have taken a minimalist, modernistic approach to cockpit design that is almost akin to what Audi has been doing for quite some time now. Regarding the 8 series, its growing on me. It's an interesting design that in my opinion looks better in person rather than pictures. However, I don't think it exudes that same exclusive, sexy, mysterious appeal that the F06/F12/F13 gives. Our generation is one of the most beautiful, exquisite, timeless, and true-to-BMW designs the company has released in decades. Even with its interesting quirks, the F-generation 6 series is still an awesome vehicle that looks modern and will be a sought after classic in decades. And after being on the road for almost 10 years (design wise), it still is a head turner that most people think is recent in design (people ask if my '14 is an '18). |

I also see something else in the rear end of the new 8 series. I see a buck tooth grin...the tail lights are the eyes and the huge & extraordinarily deep indentation around the rear license plate is a wide grin with the license plate being a huge buck tooth. Does anyone else see that or is it just me?

Yes I would agree your Vette is very nice and together with your F13 650 they must make a nice sight in the garage together mate , great work! I have my 2015 650 parked next to my 2010 Range Rover Sport Supercharged. While of course the Rangie isn't as gorgeous as the 6 series I have to say I love it just as much and don't plan on being without either. I believe they are both modern classics. Merry Xmas all have a safe and happy holidays! |
