Bah, nothing to worry about. I remember this stuff coming up when I was a kid in the 80s. "kids cant do math", "they cant find the US on a map", "They don't know what the constitution is", etc. Well that was 35 years ago now and all those dumb little kids are all grown up and in charge and we're doing just....Yeah, OK we're F'd!

I'm afraid of all the 5th place trophy winners becoming adults

Edit: we told our twin girls (teen years) we LIED, they're not real princesses 👸 👑 🏰

We simply told em it's up to themselves to be successful and content, we will help here n there but it's ultimately up to them

I see them all the time as new employees at my company. Takes a couple years to program out all the "You did only what was asked so you deserve a gold medal, a promotion, a raise, and a voice in the company" crap their parents programmed into them. Some quit first, but a select few make a good turn around and become self-sufficient adults. It take a massive amount of hand holding and effort though. I've begun crafting interview questions to try to weed out the really "special" ones but it's hard to do. When asked about desired career trajectory I had one young engineer tell me in all honesty his goal was to have my job (VP of Engineering) in "3 to 5 years." I had another one tell me she thought a year over year comp growth of 20% to 25% was in-line with her expectations. Ha! If you start poking around in there you can uncover the ones who have been programmed to believe that they are truly special, even though they came in 5th place in participation.

I give you credit, working in Seattle! You must see some real gems. They’re here also but it seems out there is like the major leagues vs. the minors here...

He gave you those "3 to 5 years" to proceed along your own "career trajectory".

Are you still hiring? I'll lower myself to take a job mopping the floors, as long as it comes with a title of Chief Custodial Engineer, a corner office, and a company Porsche. Oh, can I have next Wednesday and Thursday off? My friends and I have a trip to the beach planned.

Seriously though, it took me 34 years to finally score a coveted corner office. Much of that time was spent working in an underground closet-sized office, with no windows. Moved in last November (2019), and had only 4 months to enjoy it before COVID-geddon made my job 100% work-from-home.....

The only thing missing is a cabinet for scotch and bourbon, as well as crystal snifters and whiskey glasses. Essential part of any home office.

That's my WORK office! I don't have pictures of the other half, but there is a meeting table, another book shelf unit, an 8-foot whiteboard, and two more windows behind the camera. Much of the furniture (except the desk) was custom-built for the last president's office, and cast off in less than a year when that president was run out. Note that I changed the room number on the door to pi, because it is irrational for one person to have such a large office when I left behind 5 colleagues who are all cramped into a shared office space about the same square footage.

Let me tell you a funny story about what happens when an IT person gets moved from a cramped shared office suite with tiny desks to the mother-of-all private offices. The other IT people who got moved into even more cramped spaces with even smaller desks get jealous, and they are the ones who do cable management and office setups for the entire organization. Long story short, I had to do my own cable management...funded out of my own pocket...without access to the supply room to grab all of the cables and stuff that I needed to avoid the conflict until things settled down.

The above picture was taken the day that I moved, and I was still trying to figure out how to lay out a huge desk. For a scale, those cables were in raceways with slack to spare in my old desk! I allocated 4 hours to move, and needed to be up and running ASAP to handle emergencies. With no access to the supply room for longer cables and organizers (and a state fire inspector on-site all week looking to write citations for extension cords in offices), I didn't have an option other than stretching the short cords to a floor-standing UPS until I could order the correct cables and raceways. When the stuff came in, I spent the better part of a day teaching an intern about the art of cable management.

It is worth mentioning that my new office passed the state fire inspection with flying colors. Don't ask about the offices of the people who do cable management and office setups for the entire organization. In their defense, the room that they are all crammed into probably needs a 100 amp sub-panel to run the gear for five people per the local electrical code.....

Ah, sorry! I assumed since my home office looks a lot like that if you place a wall on the left. But anyway, I would still insist on a liquor cabinet. Even if you have to custom build it into the existing furniture.
