When should I change tires?
Hi,
Just saw these little cuts while checking the air pressure today. How many miles do you think I have before I need new tires? Any better was of checking the remaining life? Thank so much! |

I believe it's called feathering and it's nothing to worry about unless chunks start coming apart, then the material of the tire is dead from weather or salt, etc. a lot of things can eat away at rubber materials. If they are hardening you might want to replace them anyway and you would notice if you start to lose traction consistently.

What you're showing is not a problem, it's a common wear pattern on a tire that shows repeated heat cycles or weathering.
You should replace your tires at a minimum tread level which for most people would be around 2 or 3/32nds for a street tire.

As bleunetizen points out, the cracks are probably an indication that the tires are aging. Check the date code on the tire. The wear pattern is normal for aggressive driving but the cracks will cause chunking of the tire under hard use (next time you hit the track)

i'm no tire expert, but if I saw this I wouldn't necessarily be concerned of a catastrophic blowout, but I bet the tire compound itself has lost some quality. kind of like an old crappy tennis ball or something that is basically useless if you're used to new, decent tires. I had a set do this and I noticed much worse performance on the track. Needing grip when it's a safety factor would by my biggest concern (but granted is rarely optimized for all situations with a single set of tires, no matter how new, what brand, etc... it's just nice to give yourself an edge if you can!)
anyway, that's my two cents
