650 vs M6 Reliability

I currently drive 650 XDrive GC. Almost 2 years no issues except some oil consumption 1-2 quarts every 4-5K miles. I am wondering if I should buy it after the lease or try to get into an M6. How about the longevity of the regular V8 vs the M version? Any input highly appreciated

I think the new TU motors are still too new for any long term or high mileage results, but unless you are intending to keep the car for the long term I would have no worries with either. The TU motors seem to be very reliable so far. Your oil usage may not be typical, but I don't know that it is anything to worry about either. My 650xi GC doesnt burn a drop over the 10K service interval.

Well the question about longevity of regular V8 and M version is not something we can answer because I doubt anyone has S63tu with over 100k to see how it works BUT there is another comparison between regular 6er (650i in this case) and M6 and that's gonna be a lot.
To be honest with you they both share the same body SHAPE and that's all about the common ground. Even the body of M6 is more aggressive than 650i(CF Roof, bumpers and fenders).
The rest of the components are totally different. DCT vs ZF8, regular Differential vs Active M LSD Differential, Suspension, Braking system, steering and etc. And the result is a car with much better handling, grip and stability.
If you enjoy your 650i go for the next one but if you are looking for more fun and power and torque beside the luxury of 6 er then M6 is the right choice for you.

BUMP - I too wonder how the S63TU engine reliability compares to the N63TU. I thought I was settled on getting the 650i but there are some great deals to be had on M6s now. Does anybody know if the M6 engines have had similar problems as the N63TU engines?

Way to vague of a question. How many owners? How was it driven? Tuned? I think the problem is how much yours was hammered in its previous life. This isn't just bad technology, this is in my opinion has to do with driving styles, and specifically tunes and mods. Perhaps look for a gently used with no tune / much better luck IMO. Has anyone had problems being the original owner and normal driving?

Good point. I found a 650 for a very good price with a middle aged woman being the original owner. I sincerely doubt she would have been drag racing it :-). I think that is probably the problem with buying a used M6, the chances of it being thrashed a bit are higher than your average 640/650.

I believe the S motor is going to be far more reliable than the N. The engine has been hardened for higher temps in many areas. Heat soak is the #1 issue in these engines

Ive always found these motors very reliable -either in a 650 or an M6. They are great cars!

the S63 has a far more higher build quality than the N63, all upgraded parts essentially. however both can suffer from excessive oil consumption, both can suffer from injector, spark plug, or coil failure, similar fuel pump failure, and a few other common issues just based on if the car was driven hard. there are a lot of people that blow the motors on both platforms that is still under investigation that there is no real clear answer, but a combination of things that lead to disastrous results. in my opinion i daily my M6 and feel more comfortable knowing it has all upgraded parts vs a N63. If you do your own maintenance its a very easy car to work on physically, and to maintain. I am currently at 66k miles and its catless, full FI exhaust, eventuri intakes, and stage 2 DME tuned. i love every moment in this car.

you on stock clutch? I've been wondering if I should bump to Stage2 and DPs. I'm on full GTC exhaust now and MP Stage 1 but it's not worth it to me to drop $$ for a clutch for 50 more hp

I am still on the stock clutch, you shouldnt need a clutch until you start making more than 650-700whp/wtq. I may be wrong but it think that is the general consensus on that
