F12/ F13 Rust under the left entrance cover

Hi Guys,

just want to encourage you to pull the door sill of your F12 / F13 to check if you have also some rust under the black seal. You need only 5-10 Minutes. But if you also affected you can stop this nasty but hidden problem on your car. My is from 2011 without any accident on this spot.

1.) https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/f...panel/F4UW5N3C

2.) The black seal can then simply lifted

It looks worse than it is. The rust is mainly on the surface of the white glue between the two metall layers and can be removed easily. But the metal is also already damaged...(and this is a problem)

Hard to tell from the pictures but are you sure it is rust and not cosmoline?

Cosmoline is the genericized trademark for a common class of brown wax-like petroleum-based corrosion inhibitors, typically conforming to United States Military Standard MIL-C-11796C Class 3. They are viscous when freshly applied, have a slight fluorescence, and solidify over time and exposure to air.

Will check my car tomorrow. Are you sure this is not because off accident damage to the car? Have you had any repair near by?

Thanks for the head up

That's rust for sure. And it's bubbling under the paint as well. What do they they put on the roads for ice in Germany?

Just wait until I check my car tomorrow. 7 months on shitty norwegian salty roads every year. If its common problem, my car has it. Liquid salt is the worst, creeps in everywhere,..

Yup, I see quite well on the iPad now.
Reminds me of my old 76 2002. We always joked that they were rusting on the ship coming to America.

Hi,

I am anxious how your 6 series looks like under the seal. My car had no accident on this side. Everything is original. The streets here in Germany are salty like hell in winter times.

BMW will surely fix this by their 12 years paint and rust warranty, but it doesn't bond me closer to the car...
best regards,

Simon

No panel gap and absolutely no rust on my car. Do you know the history of your car from when it was new?

gjohnsen Thanks for the Photo. I have checked the rivets at this area and they are original from the production plant. So no damage in the first two years before my ownership. Actually I suspect that the seal was damaged. Yesterday I have installed a new seal just to be on the safe site. The metal has still a corrosive damage which must be repaired by BMW.

I have not read BMW's corrosion warranty, but you think it covers that? Let us know what they say, but I have my doubts they will fix that.

Hi,

attached a picture from my old seal. I would say that water was involved...
I had already contact to my BMW dealer, he told me that they will prospectivly cover the repair. I have also cut the old seal to see if corrosion is happen at the metal inside, but it was OK.

interesting I saw a little bit of water in the corner at the b pillar as it curves upwards, but not a lot.

Still shocking though that the seal appears to have kep that water in contact and caused this issue.

I did see some "brown spots"on mine, but a little solvent and they have come away, not convinced it was "rust" as such. Either way something I did as a precaution and nothing more was blast some acf50 down there just in case as it does contain anti corrosion for cavity protection.

If this is a wider issue then it will apply to the 7 series and 5 series of this generation as well.

Hi,

the story ends well. BMW has repaired this by the corrosion warranty without further costs for me.
