Anybody ever had to replace the door lock cylinder??

This question actually relates to my X3 of the same vintage as my 650, but the issue is the same. Somebody tried to break in and destroyed the lock cylinder in the driver's door handle that nobody ever uses. No other damage. I see the cylinder can be purchased "with key" or "with key code" as two different part numbers. Anybody know what "with key code" means? If it means that it's not mated to my factory key but that I would just have a code to take to some key maker, I'm not sure why anybody would choose that option.

I could be wrong, but i believe the key code refers to the physical key that you own such that you can order an identical replacement cylinder.

Ditto….”with key code” means that your VIN is used to order the new lock cylinder so that the new lock cylinder will work with the metal key blades that are in your remotes…as well as match your other lock cylinder that is in the center console.

That's what I was hoping was the case. I'll get one and report back to confirm.

As promised I am reporting back after actually buying the door lock cylinder "with key code." As you both predicted, it came matched to my factory key. I went the closest dealer, but armed with online prices from dealers that sell online. They told me about $258, and I said that I would get it online. Suddenly $258 was about $189, so I bought it. I do that every time and get parts close enough to online dealer prices that I just buy locally.

That’s how it’s done. Arm yourself with info and many BMW dealership parts departments may have a “sliding” scale in regard to cost. Inquiring if they can price match then adding local taxes…may be as cheap or come close to the cost of buying online + shipping & handling.

Perhaps your experience will encourage some that don’t even consider their local BMW dealership due to their experience with the service department. The parts dept can be a totally different experience.

Yeah, I'm on a first-name basis with the main guy at the parts counter, who was not there when I bought the lock. But to him I usually just say "What will you sell it to me for so I don't have to buy it online?" What's amazing is how steep the discounts are. It's not like 5-10%, which would be great, but 25-30%. You realize how much people pay every year that they don't have to, and how much profit there is in parts.
