M6 vs M5 intake crossover pipe?
Interesting that it looks like the M5 has a tube that connects the two elbows before the charge coolers, and the M6 does not have this. I can only assume this is to balance the pressure across both side of the motor. Any thoughts on why the difference? I didn't realize there were significant variations between the S63tu installed in the M5.

Aside from the fact that the S63TU4 is completely re-engineered from the S63TU in our F10/F06/F12/F13
I'm still wondering the exact same question as the OP. Does the tube equalize pressure between the two banks? Why is that? My S63TU datalogs doesn't show much difference between the two banks in relation to manifold and pre-throttle boost |

One additional thought on how there might be a small feedback loop built into the system for equalizing pressures... The novel hot V mounting allows for exhaust pulses from both banks to drive the turbo. If it was just the left side driving the left turbo, pushing air into the left side, no systematic balancing happens and some other form of intake equalization would be necessary. Regardless, there must be some benefit to it or they wouldn't have put it there on the TU4.
I am curious though, I didn't think the TU4 was "completely re-engineered"?? The differences all seem to be fairly minor from the TU0? |

From what I can tell the changes in the turbos, exhaust manifolds, downpipes, etc. are not actually significant. The fuel injectors, well that is different. But I still wouldn't say completely re-engineered.

I dont think its as extensive as that. the oil system is a little different, not much, has a more piston oil holes, the ICs are a little different with pressure balance being the main change. fueling is in fact different, and a great upgrade.
the exhaust and turbo setup is a little different to accommodate the ZF auto, but the turbos are very similar to the Tu2, which were already similar to the tu. the non tu s63 is vastly different. thats what i get after reading all the technical documentation across the different engine variants. unless im starting the blend them all now

Yep, oiling/piston changes to further reduce oil consumption. IC's for increased airflow and pressure balance. turbo/downpipe changes to get around the larger bell housing.
The higher fuel rail pressures would be the only thing that could have significant impact on performance, IMO. (potentially removing HPFP problems on 800+ HP builds...) TU0-2-4 are all incremental improvements, not re-designs. |
