Thoughts of owning 2017 M6 out of warranty

I have wanted a M4 Convertible, but found a local M6 convertible with 24,000 certified pre owned. Thoughts on owning out of warranty.

Thanks

Isn’t certified preowned come with some warranty? But to answer your question, I wouldn’t recommend owning it without a warranty, unless you’re good at fixing your own car. Side note, they are asking way too much for that car in your link.

Given the state of the market, I have not found any cheaper.

I’d buy an aftermarket warranty at the dealer. Just for piece of mind especially with the very very expensive problems that can happen like the motor rear end etc.. I paid 3600 for my exclusionary 3 year 30k warranty from the bmw dealership we’re I bought my car. I wouldn’t of bought a warranty if I bought an m4 as I was looking at m4 coupes when I bought my m6 vert. The m6 convertible is just a much nicer car in every way except handling. They get so much more attention than a m4 which almost look like any ordinary bmw to someone who doesn’t know. That’s also a very rare and nice color combo the moonstone with black wheels.

Since it's certified, you get one year warranty. Verify with the dealer.
And I agree on the price being way too high.

I am on the other side of the spectrum - considering this is at a dealer, I assume there is no tuning?

If not, I would consider purchasing with no warranty. To me, it's about how many owners, the records, and the frequency of the oil changes that it received.

Yes, there is a risk however if this was driven correctly, and the miles are 6k per year - you should be able to buy with confidence and at a 3rd party later. Talking 500 or less miles a month... so NOT a daily driver, likely a weekend car.

I bought my 2014 in 2019 with very similar miles from a single owner, older gentleman - no mods. Change oil every 2,500 miles and keep my fingers crossed!

If you only comfortable with local buying then it’s a tough situation to find this car, they are pretty rare. Here is one similar to the link, older but it’s half the price!!

From the ad: Additional plans are available to extend coverage, if desired, Every vehicle is thoroughly inspected and reconditioned by BMW-Certified technicians, 1-Year/Unlimited Miles plus balance of original new vehicle limited warranty (4-Year/50,000-miles)

It comes with one year, but you should buy a longer term one from them too

That seems pretty expensive to me, too. A quick look on autotrader finds a bunch of better deals on F12s. This one has about half the miles--only 13K-- and is $9K less:

There are several threads on here about warranties. If you want to transfer some of your risk it can be worth the money. As mikerx5 says, if you have year from CPO that maybe enough. Certainly it gives you some time to assess.

Maybe a more important question is whether you should move toward the M6 or stick with the M4. They are really different cars. I think the M6 is a lot more special, but it is not the best choice for everyone. Look for the recent discussion started by a guy wondering if he should trade up from his M3.
