2012-2014 M6 To BUY or NOT To Buy ???...that is the question..

Hello everyone,
I’m currently in the market for a BMW M6 convertible. I am/was looking at 2012-2014 models ( price dropped quite a bit on these models) and just found out about all the problems they have with the N63engine. My other consideration is a Maserati GrandTurismo convertible. Obviously totally different car. I honestly would love a M6 but I’m really worried about all the horrifying stories you find on the net these days regarding these engines. I guess I need some feedback from any of you out there who own such a beastly machine. Is it worth taking the risk in purchasing one ? Is there a risk? If I decide to take the plunge, what should I know/look for ? Is there a way you can tell if the car has problems or not? What year car will it be more reliable? Or should I just forget about it and go with Maserati? Problem is I already tested a M6 and ohhh boyyyy.... hard to forget...
Any feedback/info/recommendations is truly appreciated.
Thank you.

The M6 convertible is an amazing cruiser and fun and relaxing to drive with outstanding dual clutch sequential manual system that is lightening quick and endless power, I also have the M performance Acrapovic exhaust and it sounds amazing. Bulletproof but needs the proper maintenance. Buying used is tricky! Do your homework

I am only considering a car with low mileage and a carfax that shows proper maintenance. I’m not looking to do any modifications to engine or exhaust but I’m finding out there are some parts that is recommended to be replaced (rod bearing, spark plugs)..... BTW I love your M6 color scheme... I didn’t think an M6 can be anything but black, but there it is. ... great choice...

I have had my 2013 F12 M6 for over 2 years now. I purchased it used with 48k miles. I have heavily modified my car and I love it. I have done intakes, charge pipes, full turbo back valved exhaust. An Idrive retrofit and many other modifications.

The car has never given me any issues and I am at about 75k miles today. the big things to do for maintenance on this car is spark plugs and coil packs, front 02 sensors, and frequent oil changes. I would recommend using thicker oil 5W-40 or 5W-50, and max change interval should be 5k miles.

The things to worry about are rod bearings, bent rods and broken pistons(really only seen when running meth injection) the reason the rods wear out is from oil thinning out with lower grade viscosity oil, and bent rods come from too much low end torque. just don't full load and full throttle car below 4k rpms.

If you take care of it with these easy maintenance items and driving habits, it will be perfect for a long time.

Well...first, the f12 M6 doesn't have the N63 engine...the real M6 has the S63 engine. The 2011-12 f12 650i does have the N63 engine...and the 2013-14 f12 650i has the N63TU engine.

If you like technology...I'd recommend the 2014 model year since it has the NBT/ID4 iDrive system whereas the 2011-13 model years will have the CIC iDrive. The NBT iDrive will have a screen with a little bit better resolution...and you may still be able to use some of the stuff in BMW Connected Drive since it may be 3G-4G capable. The early version CIC has already become obsolete since it was only 2G compatible.

Also, depending on build date (early or late) I believe the 2014 model year is when the larger iDrive controller knob debuted which also gives some "touch" capability.

Thank you for your kind words, if you do your homework and inspect the car carefully you can find the right one for you.Like any supercar they're expensive when they're not maintained properly. Enjoy the search and I hope you find the right one. Happy Thanksgiving

I have had M cars for the past few years. I went from a 2011 x6 M to a 2013 x6 M to now a 2015 M6 grand coupe comp package with carbon ceramic breaks and individualized interior and exterior in black citron...

I have had the m6 for close to two years and over the history of this car the original sticker was $ 151k+ ... I have it as my daily and baby it every step of the way. All service visits and each item I upgrade are all bmw oem and so far I'm reaching close to 70k miles without any issues.

I have done various upgrades will happily share when I find some time and energy...

Remember the 2015 gained more HP over the previous years... worth going past 2014 if possible for the gained HP...

I may consider selling if the price is right... until then I love this space ship.
