640d MY 18

Hi all popping in from the 7series forum. I have a 740e and went to look at a 640d Mpsort Gran Coupe . It’s fairly well specced and I’m tempted. I feel the 740e is too big and afraid I will miss it if I go for the 640d .Also does the 6 series come with Ambient lighting as std ? Thanks.

Interior ambient lighting is standard, but it's not variable. It's a pale orange color in a strip near the top of the doors and inside the door storage pockets. It's not real exciting. It is enhanced a bit of you also have the B&O stereo because the speakers also have ambient lighting outlines on the bottom and sides of the speakers in white.

I've recently changed from a G30 (current 5 series) to a 640d GC, so although the 5 is a bit smaller than the 7 I had similar concerns about whether I would miss the latest tech / appearance of the 5 interior - which is similar to the 7 - as opposed to the previous incarnation of the 6.

Things like the ambient lighting isn't as good as the current spec look and feel, in fact if you have the dash lighting adjusted to a level that isn't too obtrusive, the ambient lighting is barely visible - it's a shame but for me, not a deal breaker as there are so many other things where the 6 wins out.

You shouldn't be under any illusion about the size of the car, at 5 metres it's hardly small I would suggest that the main consideration is how much you use the back seat of the 7. The 6 will easily accommodate 2 adults and a (very) occasional 3rd person, legs akimbo. The seats fold down which gives a great boot space, albeit quite shallow....but the engine, the styling, the performance, the build quality is fantastic.

I was considering a 7 but I kept going back to the 640d, it was a head and heart thing when I bought the 5 and at that time, the head won out.....this time round I "did the right thing" and haven't regretted it once.

Going from the current 7 series to a 640d is a step down i my opionion. The 6 series F06 is based on the earlier 5 series platform.

Your car is better in all aspects except that the 6 series looks much better. The size is almost the same.
