Considering a 640i GT (coming from a 2018 Volvo S90)

Hey all - I've been a long-time forum member, but haven't posted in a while. We currently have a 2018 Volvo S90 that's coming off-lease this Fall. We don't normally lease cars (read: we've NEVER leased a car), but I'm tall and we have two very tall teenage boys, and we were smitten by the design and long wheelbase (LWB) platform that results in truly limousine type rear-legroom. We leased because we weren't sure we wanted a car that large long-term. Well, my wife is now spoiled with the legroom and I'll admit I love that I can stretch my 6'-6" frame as far back as I want without disrupting legroom for my boys in the back. We love just about EVERYTHING about the S90 except for the powertrain...I simply detest the turbo/supercharged I-4 because it sounds terrible and because of its "surge-y" power delivery. It ruins the whole experience.

In researching what to replace it with, there are very few options for LWB cars. I suddenly recalled stumbling on the 6GT at the dealer a few years back, and was then reminded of the vehicle when I saw the reports this past week about the new update, which looks PHENOMENAL but I was SO disappointed to learn that it's been discontinued in the NA market. But, I'm not opposed to purchasing a lightly used or certified model, as 2 of my last 3 car purchases were used, and I've had excellent success with this.

So, sorry for the rambling post, but for current 6GT owner, a few questions:

1 - What are your favorite things about the 6GT (and what are the things you dislike)?

2 - Is the rear-seat legroom exceptional? Anyone with any experience with the Volvo S90 and how it compares? Is it similar to the 7-series?

3 - What are some options that you think are must-haves? Here are my minimums: M-Sport, Apple CarPlay, Adaptive Cruise (Driving Assistant Plus?), and to a lesser extent, Tech Package/Heads-up Display (I'm a bit less familiar with option packages on the 6)

4 - Is the Dynamic Handling Package worthwhile? Is it fairly rare? I'll have to say I'm a bit jaded on this as I spent WAY too much time looking for that on our F30 M335i, and I'd categorize it as a huge disappointment (the practical impact of it is indiscernible in almost every daily driving situation).

Sorry for the rambling post...thought I'd give a bit of background. Thanks for any input/advice you may have, specifically regarding the interior space/rear legroom.

Thanks!

Sadly, the 640i GT was only available in North America for model years 2018 and 2019.
I love the space inside. If you haven't yet found it (rounded) the rear head room is 39", the rear leg room is 40" and the rear shoulder room is 57". Front head is 39"; front leg is 41"; front shoulder is 60". If you can find one, you have to try one.
With the extra size (200" long) I find I usually have to swing wider on right turns in particular. I have a 2018 and most Canadian cars came fully equipped. I especially like the 2 axle air suspension which adjusts itself with weight and lowers slightly when parked and at high speed. The rear wing also goes up automatically at speed or you can raise it manually from the console.
The trunk is massive (31cu.ft seats up). There is no spare, jack or wrench; runflats are the norm so there is some underfloor space(not deep for a spare).
Only get a car with Comfort seats. Mine are ventilated and massage versions.
The car is powerful (335hp) but not ludicrous speed since it weighs 4400lb.
The one option I've never used is the parking assistant (mostly because I park away from all other cars anyway).
I added tint all around but your boys might appreciate the electric side sunshades (despite what literature says there is no rear sunshade).
I've never had DHP so don't know what I might be missing.
I have Nappa leather, Adaptive cruise (love it), HUD, Soft close doors and hands free tailgate.

The biggest most luxurious car I've ever owned. I expect to keep it a long time.
Did I mention I love it.

Thanks for the thorough response! The reason I asked about personal experience with rear legroom is that statistics are almost meaningless because there's no standard way of measuring. The Volvo S90 (2018 models and newer) are the long wheelbase version, and the rear legroom is CAVERNOUS which is awesome. I suspect the 640i GT is probably not quite as generous, but close enough to work.

Also, I thought the air suspension came with the DHP? Are they separate packages? Maybe it's different in the Canadian setup that the U.S.?

p.s. It's too bad the updated 2021 model isn't coming to the N.A....the updated front end and digital dash/infotainment looks awesome.

THE LEGROOM IS LARGER THAN A 5ER AND IS EASIER TO ENTER SINCE THE DOOR OPENS FURTHER. THE SEAT IS HIGHER THAN A 5ER WITH A 10 DEGREE ADJUSTABLE BACK AND COMES WITH AUTOMATIC 4-ZONE CLIMATE CONTROL.

LIKE ANY PACKAGE IT CAN BE UNBUNDLED. CANADIAN CARS HAVE 2 AXLE AIR SUSPENSION AS STANDARD (UNSURE ABOUT U.S.) JUST LIKE HUD. TO MY KNOWLEDGE I DON'T HAVE DHP (NO REAR STEERING). BUT I DO HAVE COMFORT PLUS AND SPORT PLUS AS WELL AS SPORT TRANSMISSION WITH PADDLE SHIFTERS (ALL STANDARD).
GOOD LUCK

I've had mine for 7 months and I love it!

Interior - I have comfort seats, which are brilliant, loads of adjustment, but I haven't really used the massage function much. The 530d was smooth and quiet, but this is smoother and quieter by a surprising margin. HUD and digital dash are great, pano roof is really good and doesn't impact headroom, rear space is colossal and, with the seats down, it has more load capacity than a 5 series estate or the wife's X3.

Exterior - Rear camera is really useful, Active headlights are powerful and effective, folding mirrors are very handy.

Driving experience - I don't tend to hurl it round corners (too old for that malarkey) but when you hustle it, it's deceptively quick and handles extremely well for what is. essentially, a 7 series hatchback.

Overall - For once, a BMW with an exceptional level of standard equipment. Quick, comfortable, immensely practical and, if you buy an ex-demo (mine was a 6 month old BMW Group car with 4,700 miles), incredibly good value. Mine was £65k list and I paid £35k.

And....the only thing that frustrates me is that with iDrive 6, although I can connect both my phones, only one can be connected to 'Telephone' at any time.

Excellent feedback. I "almost" pulled the trigger on a car in California this weekend (I would had to have it shipped 1,500 miles), but decided I'd wait a bit. It was white, M-Sport, Driver Assist Plus (all pre-requisites of mine), plus rear-setback adjustment, etc. It basically had everything except the comfort seats and the DHP.

I decided to hold because I'm basically still not 100% sure if I want the 640i GT, a Tesla Model Y, or get another S90 (which are now available in the U.S. with the R-Design package, which was NOT available MY18).

p.s. It is UNBELIEVABLE to me how many GTs were ordered in the U.S. WITHOUT the Driver Assist Plus (Adaptive Cruise). I mean seriously, on an $80K car, who would get it without this $1,700 option that comes standard on even the most basic Toyota? I refuse to consider a GT without this, and so it seriously limits my options.

I believe the 6GT is a wonderful vehicle. I too picked up a service loaner with 4400 miles, and paid $52k on a $75k sticker. My vehicle was not heavily optioned; however, for the price I could not beat it. This is a large vehicle so the 360 camera is helpful. I had Msport and 20" wheels, I had several people ask what kind of BMW I was driving. Ultimately, I only kept the vehicle for 4 months, I prefer the driving position of an SUV. IMO the 6GT represents one of the best car values on the market. I looked up the S90 R Design Pack, looks good.

I purchased a 2018 a little over a year ago. I live in Minnesota and searched nationwide for a model with Drive Assistance Plus, Parking Assistance Plus, heated rear seats and steering wheel, and HUD. Those were the “must haves”. I agree it’s hard to believe a nearly $80K car is optioned without those features but consider that the bulk of the 640GT’s were demo and loaner cars, not ordered by individuals.

I eventually found at CPO with the options I wanted in San Antonio for $48K and 12K miles. The window sticker was $78K. That was in March of 2019. It also has the comfort seating, is in M-sport trim, and has 20” staggered wheels. I bought it after having a pre-inspection done and flew down to buy it.

Since then I’ve put on over 25K miles. I bought it specifically for road trips: MN to Maine, MN to TX, MN to FL. It’s the *perfect* car for this use. Since it’s CPO, it has an extra year of warranty and unlimited miles. I expect I’ll have nearly 100K miles on it by the time it’s out of warranty. I’m lucky to have an independent BMW specialist nearby for routine maintenance. In the time I’ve bought it, I did have the passenger window regulator and the radiator grill shutter motor replaced under warranty at the dealer.

I was able to pick up a second set of BMW 19” wheels (non-staggered) for winter use. I ditched the summer run-flats as well on the 20” wheels for a set of Conti’s and it’s a lot quieter now and rides nicer.
My daughter’s finance is 6’-2” and he finds the back seat very roomy. Plenty of leg and head room.

It’s so versatile. A great road trip car, I’ve also folded the rear seats and removed the privacy shelves, laid out a tarp, and put 18 bags of mulch in the back. With launch control and ¼ tank of gas, I’ve pulled a couple of 4.8 second 0-60 runs.

Oh, and @Ronstein, I’m able to connect both my phone and my wife’s to iDrive and both can take calls. I found I can disable my wife’s phone for calls but still use hers to stream books. So you might want to check the configuration of your iDrive phone settings, because I know two phones can connect at the same time.

That's a beautiful car, and I love those wheels. What color is the interior? I love the "white" leather, but it seems very rare...

Yes, it's the white leather. I was a little worried about stains, especially from blue jeans, but it hasn't been a problem. I clean the interior about once a month and it keeps it in top shape.

Yes. They call it carbon gray. Personally, I think the lighter colors show the body lines better.

Agreed! I'm about to look at one in that exact color tomorrow with a black interior at my local dealer, but I agree that lighter looks better. I'd much prefer white, and maybe silver or that Bluestone color as a distant second. The white "ivory" must look great though with the darker grey!

I thjink that the problem is that I activated ApplePlay before finding out it was sh*t and it needs to be deactivated before it will allow both phones to connect.
