Oh boy my reflux has been so bad lately. I need to have a review of my reflux medication.

I have also figured out… I have a good leg and a bad leg!

Years ago I had bad acid reflux. My doc started me on Famotidine 40 mg (otc Pepcid) in the morning and Pantoprazole 40 mg at night. Haven't had any acid reflux since.

Didn't I read you are a doctor, or was that somebody else? If so, can you prescribe for yourself or do you have to go to a doctor?

Yes, I am a doctor. It’s not seen as good practice to self-prescribe so when I have needed to, I prescribe to a friend instead. However, I have been under the care of a very good consultant. Who in fairness has been pretty good and not required much guidance from me. He specializes in stomach issues. My LPR (silent reflux) is quite complex. We’ve tried a few things including the one you suggest kindly and despite it my voice keeps going hoarse at random. So I am at a loss. He has ordered more tests and now suspects it is long COVID. He says he has seen a rise in LPR with those who tested negative and didn’t present with classic COVID symptoms. It’s plausible and I have been exposed to many patients presenting with COVID over the past few years. We sometimes disagree on things. My knowledge points towards how the stomach is best acidic so why take acidity away from it?! There are different schools of thought. Recently, I read up on using baking soda so I will try that. Hopefully it passes in a few months.

I have heard that we make more stomach acid than we need so the medicine that reduces it does not reduce it so much that it will cause a problem. I had some throat problems as well and the doc who prescribed the meds for me is an ENT doctor.

PS - I hope that you feel better soon.

My Dad suffered with acid reflux. He was diagnosed with H. Pylori. He was so afraid that the reflux would lead to cancer of the trachea, which is what killed his father and his brother. But they were both heavy smokers and Dad was not.

Smoking: one of the stupidest and most dangerous things we’ve ever done. Glad I quit. Wish everyone would.

It's interesting that you mention this in 2023, as my then 60-year old grandfather was using baking soda for what I now believe must have been acid reflux when we would tour the West by car in the late 1950s. He didn't travel without baking soda and a water bag hanging off his front bumper. If memory serves, he took baking soda with some water at least four or five times a day and was clearly in discomfort before taking them.

A close friend suffered from acid reflux for many years and has now progressed to the point where it's difficult for him to swallow. He and the wife eat out three meals a day; under the circumstances, I don't know how he manages to continue with that approach to getting fed.

This has had two effects for him: among others, he now avoids spicy and acidic foods; better, he's lost a great deal of weight he should have lost years ago, and this has resulted in a significant reduction of prescription medications, including one for type 2 diabetes.

I keep meaning to ask him if the ED medications he takes work better now - I need to remember to ask him!

^ The meds I mentioned above have cleared up all acid reflux problems I was having, including in my throat. Never had a weight problem but good that your friend's dropped some weight. As we know, many other problems can come from being overweight.

Reminds me of this song.

PS - I will add that I'm not placing blame on people that are overweight. Sometimes it's hard to overcome. My older sister was overweight as a child and there was a lot of fat shaming, which made life hard for her. Bless her heart. She died of cancer several years ago.

You know you're old when your Valentines Day plans after work with your wife include giving the dogs a bath, running over to your parents house to take their garbage to the curb since they are out of town, and walking to the post office to drop off ballots.

If you can’t figure out the opportunity with wet dogs to get your wife’s clothes off, you really are old

I smoked for the last 18 months I was in the Army. Cigarettes were cheap in Germany and free in Vietnam. I quit the day I separated from the Army and never looked back. Kept my Zippo, though.

Good for quitting.

I started when I was young. Stupid kid. Quit more than 20 years ago. Can't stand the smell now.

Zippos are cool...

They are the best, and I smoked less than 100 cigarettes while in my early teens.

For some it’s the Great Recession…. For me, I’m fortunate to have missed the recession.

You know you're old not when you're turn gray but when you are totally gray. For me, I have a whole head of hair but there's nothing left to turn. It's 100% gray. My wife tells me it looks good. I'm choosing to believe her instead of worrying about it.
