M6 at 50k miles

I will hit 50k today or tomorrow. Anyone see any major changes/issues at this point? Except for excessive oil consumption and one warranty claim, mine has been very solid.

Mine is at 38 and I've had a bunch of little stuff. Currently in shop for brake squeeking and seat belt malfunction. Recently was in shop rear view camera gromet dry rotting, Trunk seal pulling off, headlight mis aimed. I am debating whether to get extended warranty or sell it once factory is up. I haven't had to pay for any of this and they haven't been any big big problems but a LOT of little stuff. So having to pay all the time for these little diagnostics and then to have them fixed can REALLY add up. It's all luck though I think.

Just bought mine used at 32k miles as an approved used with 12 month BMW warranty. Creaky seat was fixed with PTFE spray and the rear BMW symbol on the camera is a bit corroded which I'm fixing myself. No other issues other than ever so slightly rough idle at times but have been told that's normal.

Haven't heard of excessive oil consumption for this engine before. Will need to keep an eye on that.

I go through 2 quarts every 1250-1300 miles, though dealer gives it to me for free.

That's a ludicrously high figure. I'm surprised you don't see, or smell buring oil. Means you're doing 300+ miles per pint! So you're probably 'changing' your oil at least twice before the regular 10K service interval actually flags up. (Strangely it's at 15K in the UK). I guess BMW are hanging onto the fact that it's a lot cheaper to give you free of charge oil than replace the engine...

32,000 here. trunk seal pulled off, quart of oil every 5K, recharged air conditioning, squealing front pads changed - all done by dealer under warranty.

BMWROG, according to BMW they consider normal for up to 1.5l/1000Km, or 1 quart every 421 miles. One change was now when it asks for oil, I was told to put in 2 quarts, so I add oil every 1250 miles or so.

I might try Redline 5W30 Motor Oil or Liqui Moly 2249 Leichtlauf Special LL and see if that has any effect

It wont make any difference as I had the same issue to the worst effect of 1 litre per 250-280 miles. Piston rings and valve slightly out of tolerance, enough to warrant a new block.

IM6, your consumption was below the BMW standard of roughly 421 miles, I get 650-675 miles a liter, so no repair for me.

Did you actually try these oils?

Garage List
At about 24k miles, no oil consumption. Trunk seal needed reattached a few months ago. Just ordered tires to replace the factory Michelins.

That’s for sure. I pm’d you back in 2014 about your engine breakin procedure to use on my dads car and he’s currently at 44k miles and not a single drop of engine oil used . F10 M5 CP.

Thanks again!

Hi I am back in the market for one, anyway IF the engine is using that much Oil BMW should replace the Engine, here in the uk the limit was 1 ltr/900 miles, new engine or some kind of rebuild.
IF it's still warranted

I always break-in my BMW engines the hard way and they end up never burning oil between changes, and always makes better power on the dyno compared to BMW's that eat thru oil. If BMW did this break-in method with each car before selling them, they would be saving a ton of money on all this extra oil.

Yep I do the same, get it Hot and work it up and down the gears using engine braking, works every time.

I am second owner, I presume first owner was too gentle on car.

BMW will not fix, they now say 1.5 liters per 1,0000 kilometers is acceptable consumption.

Yeah, getting a car second hand is always a gamble, the fact the engine didn't burn oil was one of the main points of why he bought the car after the lease was up

Plus the fact the F90 M5 isn't a massive leap on.

agreed and at £90k list + options its a ludicrous price for a mundane looking M Car, begs the question what that extra c£20k offers over the last F10 M5, just AWD given the engines more or less the same !.

if the rule of thumb follows this means the new 8 will be atleast £110K ++, pushing it into exotica territory
