Steering wheel options

Hi all, newb owner in the UK, got a '16 640d GC.
Bit of a weird one but for all the quality in the car I find the bottom spoke of the M sport steering wheel really nasty plastic and the hole behind it notices when turning the wheel, I can't believe this is bugging me but it is.
I was thinking of getting the leather re-trimmed as I did in my last BMW but thought I'd see if anyone had done anything better with the wheel first?

Yeah he did my last one from an M5 but it's not the leather that bothers me it's the crappy plastic.

ah i think its the same with the carbon trim as it needs to screw in the back. You can always put abit of cloth tape over it?

I'll have to get used to it, maybe having nice new leather will distract me LOL!

Which steering wheel do you have?

Apparently you are referring to #3 in the diagrams below..but which steering wheel do you have...the sport steering wheel (top) or the M-sport steering wheel (bottom)?

You could always fabricate something...like cover it with leather or some other material like carbon fiber or Alcantara if you don't like the plastic.

It's the bottom one, the M sport wheel and it's parts 3 & 4 that seem horrible and cheap with the hole for the screw at the back of no.4 that for some reason I notice as I turn the wheel.

why not just replace the parts for the cost of repairing or refurb

If you look at the rear side of the steering wheel cover at the ebay link, you can see that material is covering it. Cant' tell if it is leather or vinyl...but it is obvious that material is clued to it:

Thanks, that would definitely make it nicer, especially if the rear piece could be covered. Something I'll look into.

The back of part B will need to be covered as that is where the hole is...

Just an FYI to help those that may not be familiar with the parts database diagrams.

The encircled numbers (or letters) pertain to hardware in the diagram and there’s usually an inset within the diagrams for the various or available hardware. And if you do go to the diagram, there’s usually supplemental info in the column or the part number index below the diagram that can also help with figuring out what is in the diagram or what is required based on options etc.

For example B is a screw that secures #4 to the bottom of the steering wheel from the rear which also secures (& screws into) #3 which is the front piece.

The reason I ask is when looking at RealOEM the back covers are different parts between an M6 and a 640D:
M6: 32307848270
640D: 32307848268

So if I bought an M front cover: 32307846029 that is leather trimmed I'm not sure if it is a straight swap onto the same back I already have or if I need the M6 rear cover too and assume that fits the same wheel.

Either way I'm sending the wheel off for a retrim soon, I was going for the tri-colour M stitching but I'm thinking it will suit the car better if I get the contrasting Cinnamon brown stitching on the black leather as that is what is on the black leather parts of the dash. Is there a specific name for the thread or is it Cinnamon brown thread?
I will ask Jack @ Royal steering wheels but they are closed at the moment.

If your car has this 32307848268 then you need the 32307848270 to use the 32307846029 part

If you google BMW xx xx x xxx xxx (x=the actual 11 digit BMW part nbrs) for each version of #4…I think you’ll see images of each part (take note of the back side of each) that shows these two parts look physically different. Does this mean they won’t mate-up? I don’t know, but you can be the guinea-pig to let everyone else know.

Or you could play it safe and buy the front/rear parts (#3 & #4) that you know will mate-up based on the info in the parts database.

Hmm, I'm going to just get the retrim done first, they do look different so I don't fancy taking a punt and losing cash at the moment.
