F06 Trunk Gas Struts Help

I’m still under CPO, but I’m not getting any love from my dealer to replace my tired rear trunk struts. They’re very inexpensive, and I’ve looked at the area and frankly I’m not seeing an obvious way to replace these.

I have a 2016 F06 650ix. If anyone has a DIY for this, could you please shoot me a note. It will be much appreciated.

Here's instructions for removing trunk lid struts...as well as preliminary work for removing wheel arch trim panels to access the struts.

Just another suggestion - have you tried a different BMW dealer? I had mine replaced under warranty and I have an aftermarket warranty which covered it fully. A CPO car should be covered too.

I had both my struts replaced under warranty. Lasted until cold weather came, now lid pops open but does not open fully. The strut is two parts, gas strut stops lid slamming down, spring pushes lid open. The spring is not strong enough to last, which is the design issue. I have written to manufacturer who blame BMW, wrote to BMW, they blame manufacturer. Go figure!

We can always look forward to the sunny days and warmer temperatures of summer...which will help build pressure in our trunk’s gas struts that then will help pop the trunk higher and sometimes fully open the lid. Ah yes...the hot sunny summer days.

-17 here in Minneapolis when I left the grocery parking lot this morning. The trunk popped all the way up! It hasn’t in over a year.

Sheesh, 7 degrees here this morning, and I thought that was cold!

Did you modify the springs at all or did the strut replacement fix it?

I must be missing something here. My car is an F06 BMW, i used part: 51-24-7-360-583 x2 the dealer called it a “lift cylinder”

I followed the fantastic instructions posted above by Qsilver. I saw no additional springs. Take a peek at the instructive images as well.

Are folks asking, maybe referring to the F10 mechanism? It does have an actual spring. On my 6 series there was no metal spring separate or attached to the hydraulic “lift cylinder.”

Cheers to a fellow 6 owner enduring the negative temps these last few days in MN -- this same issue with the trunk struts has been bothering me lately on my M. Figured it was just 'normal' behavior for the hydraulics when cold. May have to throw some new ones in now after hearing about your success

I picked up 2 for $58 shipped from https://www.liftsupportsdepot.com/. For that price I think it's worth trying an aftermarket brand. Not much to lose. Has to be better than the worn out shocks I have.
