Oil Consumption Problem Gone
There have been a lot of posts concerning high oil consumption in the M6s. After I purchased my new 2016 M6GC I had the same problem. I was using about a quart of oil every 1,000 miles. I had come from AMG CLSs , which used about a quart every 5,000 miles. The BMW dealer gave me the regular b.s. line that a quart every 1,000 miles was acceptable. I should also add that there are 2 late model M5s and 2 other 2016 M6s in the office building where I work, and the owners all claimed to me that they had no oil consumption issues. So, I resigned myself to the belief that I should just carry several quarts of oil in my trunk at all times.
Then around 6,000 miles, I was traveling on the Interstate and my engine shut down with a "Drivetrain Malfunction" signal. This is the only problem I have had with the car (other than the oil consumption). The car was flat bedded to the dealer who believed it was the fuel pump. The car received a new fuel pump, its 1 year oil change and check-up. Since then, I have put 2,800 miles on the car and strangely, no oil consumption. I also notice better fuel consumption. The performance is as good as ever. I went to the dealer several weeks ago to have them top off the washer fluid. While I was waiting, I spoke to one of the service advisors and told him the story. He did not think there was a connection between a fuel pump and oil consumption, but did not have any clue as to what would have caused the change. I write this for others who have the oil consumption problem to explore with their dealer.

I believe the Oil consumption is the nature of this engine. I always had to add a quarter every 1000-1500 miles will all 3 F13 (650i/M6) cars I had with different engines such as N63, N63tu and S63tu. Sometimes it was 1500 ( in average ) and rarely up to 3000 based on the way I drove them

I have owned an S52, 2-S54, 3-S65s and now an S63. Only my S65s burned oil, and between the three, only 1 had an every 1,000 mile thirst. Since I only bu used, I have to pin the issue on break-in as being the most likely culprit, either too hard or too soft.

How do you know it's used 1/4 litre so exactly? If it has done in 35 miles you've got problems. A new engine should use less oil as it's still tight.
Our 2015 M6GC has used no oil in 8000 hard miles since run in service. But my previous E63 AMG 5.5 V8TT used a lot, a litre every 2000 or so. Modded and tuned 335i before that used hardly any. 330i before that used quite a bit. I had all 4 cars from new and ran them in properly, not super careful, but sensible. I think its more about manufacturing tolerances on engine parts, some work out good and pass less oil, some not so. Last edited by doughboy; 01-16-2017 at 08:44 AM.. |

HI
thanks for the feedback, I was thinking exactly the same , never had issues before on previous cars, v10 m6 used lot less. Turbo driven engines will use more. You can do engine oil measurement through Idrive and you can see on the bar how much oil has dropped. mine has dropped 0.25 litre on 350 miles. I did hear that break-in can drink up more oil. Quote:

Funny thing is i had an F10 M5 for three years before my current 2016 M6 and that thing drank oil. Always had to keep an extra bottle or two in the trunk. My M6GC is up to 6k miles now and not a single add oil message. Same mods too. I guess its a toss up with these engines.

You can get 5qt. of full synthetic 0W-40 from Walmart for $25. I run Turbo Maxx with that concotion. 5W-30 leaks oil but 40 doesn't as much by a lot.

When I bought my 2015 M6 coupe it had about 4500 miles on the clock and after I'd done about 1800 miles it wanted a litre of oil. Over the course of my ownership (about 6 months now) its had a mixture of twisty b road thrashes and 5 hour motorway trips for work every other week and since then its been about 6500 miles and not needed a top up.
Not sure if its the motorway journeys, the b road blasts or a mixture of the two that have maybe seated the rings properly and stopped the oil burning issue. I'd also add that my E92 M3 before this burned a bit of oil when I first purchased it but after a month or so stopped so I do wonder if its something about the way I drive. |

Airz, I can tell you that my service advisor said drive harder to help with oil consumption. My car is a dd so I rarely get to stretch her legs, and my two quarts every 1350 miles is sop.

WOW, thanks 6post Member
First off, I'm new to this Forum. I've own many BMW M model and Mercedes AMG model in the past. But non surpass BMW style and character. I'm joining this forum to share experience of my M6 Gran Coupe. Please excuse if break forum rule, just please tell me. So here's my story.
I recently acquire a pre-own 2014 M6 Gran Coupe with 29k miles. Perform oil change with Castrol Edge 5w40 and filter (I perform the service at my shop). Drove about 1,200 miles, "add 1 quart of oil" message came on. Check oil level using Idrive, it was at minimum. I've own E36 M3, E46 M3 and N54 335i and non have used any oil, so this kinda worried me. Raise up to check for leaks, no leaks and no smoke from tail pipe. But oil was low base on the message. I've contacted BMW of North America, explain to rep about it, he refer me to contact a local BMW dealership. I called local Nalley BMW (Decatur, GA), they want to charge me to diag oil consumption and they believe it could have a leak. But I've been reading in this forum and google about the S63 oil consumption problem, it's a problem that BMW should address. If not connecting rod in S54, Rod Bearing in S85 and now Oil Consumption in S63. Man, I've should better off buying a Honda (LOL). So, I just change my oil to 0w40 Castrol Edge to monitor the consumption. If a quart of oil every 1,200 is what I have to live with, is that normal for these S63 motor? Thanks 6POST!!!! |

Hi and welcome to the forum.
What kind of oil did you use before? Basically 0,05% to 0,5% of the average fuel consumption per 1000km is ok. I.e. 12L average consumption 0.05% x 12 = 0,6L per 1000km 0.5% x 12 = 6L per 1000km (I find this too high) Everything in between is acceptable according to the car manufacturer. As long as there is no blue smoke coming out of the exhaust I wouldn’t be too worried. Last edited by Havy; 11-11-2018 at 04:46 AM.. |

Was there any update on the fix for the oil consumption or was it as easy as the fuel pump replacement? I currently have a 2013 M6, bought with 19K miles, now at 27K. I used to make it roughly 700-800 miles before the low oil message popped, now its running about 450-550 miles. My driving habits are pretty normal which consists of a small commute to work (20 miles roundtrip) and the occasional throttle romp to express my "love" for slow left lane drivers.... My BMW rep has expressed that the 700-800 miles fell into specs, but now seems a little hesitant about the current numbers. I haven't noticed any oil burn or leaks but they are supposed to take a look after the holidays. I was hoping anyone else has had further info. DINAN stage 1 is the only mod equipped.
