Long-ish drive
Drove up to Pismo Beach yesterday for a visit with some ‘camper’ friends. Stayed for a few hours and drove back. Went 375 miles in all and there was an indicated range of 82 miles remaining. I was impressed. A 450 mile range!

On a 650? That is mad impressive! Although i find that remaining range estimate is always hilariously optimistic…
I got 419 + 26 remaining on a trip from San Diego to Phoenix couple weeks ago. On a 640. Now i am worried that it should have been more and that something is wrong with my i6 😱 |

There’s always other criteria to look at in these situations, too...and one of those is average MPH. If your average MPH is higher (which usually occurs when traveling at a consistent speed with very little braking)...then your average MPG and range will be higher.
If or when your driving situation changes...like if you were to change over to two lane roads or urban traffic with stops signs are traffic lights...then your average MPH will drop...along with your range and average MPG. Also, if you have a destination entered into the Nav...then you will also see a little dot in the range gauge below the speedometer. That dot is an indicator of when you’ll need to refuel (if you want to make it back home without running out of gas)...and it can also be used to help find local fuel stations near that area...which you can find using the POI (point of interest) feature the navigation system has. You can also make the refueling an added destination (if you desire)...or just look in advance as to what fuel stations are near the recommended area. You can see some examples in the pics below. The dot circled in the range gauge shows when I would need to refuel when I entered my sister’s home address (about 150 miles away) when I have about a 1/2 tank of gas & considering my current MPG & MPH. I would need to refuel around the Dayton OH area. I can use the onBoard nav system to give me recommendations for refueling and approx how far away etc (again based on my current MPG & MPH)...which could change if those criteria changed (mpg & mph):

No problem...I know a lot of owners prefer the maps on their phones (google maps/Apple maps/Waze/etc)...but the native navigation system has a lot of little features that are overlooked due to it not being known or understood. The maps on their phones get used more...so it is more familiar to most people. The native BMW navigation system requires a greater learning curve in regards to some of the little gems built into the system.
BTW, the “refuel” dot not only appears on the range gauge...but there’s also a white dot on the nav map where refueling is recommended. You can see it in the one pic...the white dot is circled in green just below where Dayton appears on the map.

Of course there is a different criteria. My trip was pretty perfect - 70/75 mph on a cruise control and having to disengage it maybe 4-5 time throughout the entire trip of 5.5 hours.
Nifty tricks with the native navigation! Also, saw this for the first time I believe! ☕️ |

And I’ll assume that most of these features will disappear when 3g goes off the air next year. At least for those that have a MY16 or older.

I don’t know the answer to that, but I bet Qsilver does! It is my understanding the the Nav info is on a hard drive. I wonder if that includes all the gas stations, POIs, etc.?

Based on the last line, it looks like some platforms my be eligible for an upgrade at no cost. I wonder which will be eligible? |

In fact, my 2013 f06 (which the pics are from in post #3) already lost its BMW Connected Drive feature because it was 2G...but the range info and refueling info etc is still there and works. I updated the navigation system in Dec 2018...so the nav map software is only like 3 years old now. From reading some of the newer forums...it appears that BMW has settled on 2016+ for the ability to upgrade to 4G/5G. But there’s a lot of unhappy owners...so I’m not convinced that this is set in concrete yet in regards to the final decision of who can upgrade and/or how much it will cost to upgrade.

I don’t recall off hand but if the NBT/EVO (ID5?) is like the last CIC and NBT (ID4)...if you go to BMW ONLINE it displays which band...see the 3G icon in the upper left of the pic below:
