Transfer Case

I ran over a pothole about two weeks ago. They towed my car to a BMW dealership and changed the rim, tire, strut and some other parts of the suspension. They cost $3500 and after paying that I found out the tie rod has to be changed as well; however I didn't change it.
When I drive more than 50 mph my car shakes (not like when the tires are not balanced), makes a noise and when I want to turn the car it shakes even more.
The worst part is my car shakes on gear 1 and 2 especially between 1000 to 2000 rpm. I think there is something wrong with the transfer case. And I have to add that three tires are new and one is old (50% tread).

I'd appreciate it if anyone who experienced the same problem could give me some advice?

Tow.truck or flat bed?

All wheel drive has to be towed on a flatbed... Tow truck with two wheels on the road will mess up an x drive in a big way....

That can be the reason, but yesterday I put back those oem 19" wheels and my car runs perfectly now.
It doesn't make sense for me at all because my car was shaking so bad and the more I'd drive it the worse the problem would get.
The only thing I think might be the reason is three of my tires are new and one of them is used on the 20" but on 19" the tires all have the same tread depth.

more likely badly balanced wheels or a seriously bent rim. One worn tire wouldn't make that much of a difference.

If the fix is switching back to your oem wheels, or replacing a wheel or two consider yourself VERY lucky with that kind of damage with x drive. I have replace three wheels between my e60 550 and f12 650. It happens.

I know what you mean, but It's different, it's not like when the wheels are not balanced or bent, it's transmission. My car shakes when it starts moving in gear 1 and 2 between 1000 and 2000 rpm.

I saw you have changed your 19" style 351 to style 343. When you drive you car is the transmission as smooth as it was with those 19"?

My car drives identically on all wheels. Changing from 19 to 20" wheels makes zero difference assuming the tires are around the same diameter, which I am sure yours are. If changing your wheels solves the problem, then the problem is the wheels, not your transmission.

Your car and transmission have no idea you have changed wheels. The diameter of the tire is unchanged, which is the only thing that matters. A pound or two of weight difference is meaningless in these pigs. changing wheels size is not going to trigger a transmission issue unless you are making MAJOR changes to tire diameter, or you start mismatching tire sizes front to back on on x drive.

Did they tow your car to the shop or put it on a flat bed?

I think you're right. No, they towed my car with those small trucks, two wheels on the road.
What size are you tires?

If they towed your car there is the potential for real damage to your transmission. AWD vehicles cant be towed, they have to be flat bedded.

BUT - if transmission damage was done, it would be present regardless of wheel diameter.

I run 255/35/20 front and 295/30/20 rear on my summer wheels.

I went to BMW yesterday and the technician guy said the same thing. He said it's not the transfer case. He said the best thing for Xdrives is to put 4 wheels with the same diameter. Right now I run 255/35/20 front and 285/30/20 rear. I think I'm gonna changed the rear tires to 255/35/20.
Thank you for help.

what wheels are these tires on? 255/35/20 and 295/30/20 have the exact same diameter, but the 295 tire needs a 10-10.5" wheel.

Sorry, I meant the width. I have a set of 373. Front is 8.5" and rear is 9".

you can go with the 255/35/20 square set up on those, which is what I do for my snow tires, or you can run a 245/35/20 front and 275/30/20 rear, which is the stock staggered set up for the 650.
