Upper oil pan 2015 bmw 650i

Just got a quote from the dealership that my upper oil pan is leaking and they quoted me $2000 before tax. Has anyone gone through this or went to a Indy shop where they can give me a general idea on how much it cost for this replacement?
After research, I believe the car’s subframe needs to be dropped and is time consuming which adds more hours for labor

Update: was quoted $1500 just for labor before any parts/fluids/tax at a very reputable Indy shop, I’m guessing I just gotta bite the bullet on this one :/

XDrive is expensive because of all the stuff that needs to be removed. RWD is less expensive. How bad is it leaking? If not bad, you can live with it for a long time.

For clarity, is your Oil Pan leaking or are you talking about the valve cover? Not sure what a "Upper" oil pan is.

The oil pan has two parts - the large upper oil pan that bolts to the block- and a much smaller lower oil pan that bolts to the bottom of the upper pan. The place where the oil filter threads on is part of the upper pan.

This part here I believe it's a $800-900 part

It did not leak too bad just maybe a couple drops throughout a 24hr span. Just worried it would cause more problems for the car in the future

And to add to what I said above, "pan" is not a very accurate description these days. In the old days an oil pan was just sheet metal stamped in a shape like a bathtub with a bolt hole in the bottom to drain the oil. Now they are very complex aluminum castings that in no way resemble a pan.

I learn something everyday. Thanks. I'm more familiar with the n55 engine in the 640i...it doesn't have an "upper". But agian, your correct and what is interesting is when checking realoem.com you can see the n63 engine has this "Upper" pan where the n55 doesn't.

It sure as hell isn't something I'd worry about. Just live with it. It won't hurt anything other than a few spots on the driveway.

Yeah, I'm pretty crazy about little things, but even I would have trouble paying two grand to avoid a small leak. If I had a wet spot on my garage floor maybe, but I'd wait until then.

I would wait but keep it in mind to probably put aside the money.

Generally speaking BMW engines leak oil after certain mileage, I don't know if I missed how many miles you have on your car but after 50-60K it is pretty common. Turn on Sinatra & ignore it :0)
As of now its sitting around 30k miles give or take and I uploaded the wrong part as this the picture is for the xdrive models. Im the second owner and purchased it with only 28k miles. The original owner of this car was a true enthusiast that kept all the paperwork that was ever done to the car at BMW dealerships so I know he took care of the vehicle. Also the car would have had warranty since it had the 5 year plan because this is a 2015 model (when I went to pick up the car from him he was living in a castle like house in a well area neighborhood where houses are at minimum 2.2 mil so I know he wouldnt cheap out/shortcut repairs.) The car was leaking as the inspector I hired noticed the oil and how the under panel was pretty much saturated in oil which is why even the owner did not know the car was leaking. Its a 2015 gc with no mods except some nice BBS. I dont even have warranty on this vehicle because I believe that it would be cheaper to just save up $ towards a "repair stash" compared to purchasing a third party warranty. I plan to have this vehicle for the next 7 years and its my first BMW so im just a little worried knowing these models aren't really the most reliable cars yet somehow my dumb brain/heart still wanted it haha

So not only was that "upper oil pan" leaking but the ventilation hose I believe its called that Walt was nice enough to tell me about, was leaking as well and that is covered under BMW extended warranty. My service agent was telling me that if I were to fix the upper oil pan issue, it would be cheaper since they are already working on the ventilation hose which cuts the labor by $500. If I were to come back another day to get this fixed, then it would cost me $2500

I took my car in for something completely unrelated to the oil pan about 3 months before the CPO warranty ran out. They noticed a leak from the upper pan. They ended up doing about (according to them and from the invoice I got I have no reason to doubt) well into 5 figures worth of work to the engine because as they got in deeper they kept finding other things to fix under CPO. It was a weird mix of emotions between scared and pleasantly happy lol.

I completely agree with your feelings.... three years ago I picked up a CPO'd mini cooper S for my daughter, it had a slight oil leak that was annoying me. I took it in and the dealer began a three week oil leak bonanza that documented nearly $6K in repairs. I felt like I'd made a huge mistake in buying that car, the service manager said then that "you practically have a new car now." Thankfully not a drop of oil leaked since.

My F06 Has had a few leak repairs, but nothing like that little gem.....

They told me the same thing! Basically a rebuilt engine. Injectors, oil pan work, timing chain covers, tensioners. They had the car for just over a month and the engine came completely out. All this because I took it in to get the front seats replaced because of the infamous “clicking” issue lol.

Update: so it actually wasn't the oil pan that needed to be replaced.. just the gaskets for the upper and lower. Also got charged for brand new bolts. Total in parts was $230?
Labor was $1800

I assumed it was just gaskets. Be very strange to need an upper oil pan. I'm sure dealers charge high prices for gaskets - and everything else.

It was the labor that screwed me over.. the parts only added up to <$250 but the labor was 1800

$2000 for a few drops a day seems like you over reacted to me.

Just had my upper and lower oil pan gaskets replaced on my 2013 650 with 36K miles. Total was $2875 ($422 in parts). Thankfully had extended 3rd party warranty plan (Allstate) so it only caused me the $200 deductible.
