Suggested N63TU Mileage Limits for Stage 2 Tune?

Hey Everyone,
Long-time Bimmerpost reader, first time poster. Previous 2017 F80 M3 owner that’s looking to purchase a used F06 650i – preferably xDrive and in the 2017-2019 year range with the N63TU engine. Goal is to bring the vehicle to ~600hp at the crank with Stage 2 upgrades/custom tune.

With that said… Does anybody have any input or suggestions regarding mileage limits for N63TU tuning? I know this is really subjective question – so many factors at play, e.g. how hard the car was driven with previous owner(s), how well was it serviced and general upkeep, etc.

But for all gearheads who have tuned that engine or know it well – really just looking for your two cents and any additional warnings I might have missed while researching, e.g. “Hey man, I wouldn’t buy an F06 with over 60k miles if you plan to do a stage 2 tune and keep it for more than two years…”. As for longevity goals – I’d like to keep the car for the next 3-4 years, hopefully getting to 100k miles or so if possible.

I’ve been reading about the N63TU nonstop the past month (tuning, known problems, upkeep etc.), but figured it was worth asking on here. Whatever vehicle I get, I plan to do some comprehensive maintenance/servicing to protect the engine, especially if it’s past 40k miles. I’d prefer to get an F06 with < 35k miles, but it will depend on the price/deal. Most of the lower mileage/newer F06s I want are above $40k, which is a little beyond the price point I’m targeting.

Been scouring the internet for the best deal I can find – if the dealer I’m working with is reputable, I’m willing to fly wherever to see the car in person, test drive, then move on with purchase and paperwork if everything checks out. Might also try to take the vehicle to a BMW dealership for inspection if possible (if not a CPO from a BMW dealership).

you say you are looking for a 2017 to 2019 6 series,
just to say that the bmw factory stopped making 6 series in february 2017.
so the last ever 6 series rolled of the production line,finished and ready for shipping end of feb 2017.
at that time it was taking 4 to 6 weeks to ship to the uk..a few over here stood for a few months before bieng sold/registered.so latest registration over here is late 2017...there a a very very few early 2018 6 series that didnt sell for nearly a year..so definately no 2019 6s and very very few 2018....the 8 series started in 2018.
the 650 is also extremely rare in the uk so i couldnt give you any advice.other than my last 7 cars have been bmw 6 cylinders and all iv had remapped stage 1.usually 25%to £)5 increase and no problems at all.auto transmisions are good to tune to 720nm torque,which wont be an issue for a 650i.but 640d s over here are tuned above that.
i think the main enemy of tuning the 650i is heat under the bonet/hood..
if you really want a 2018 or 2019 you will have to get an 850i.
lots of people in usa have tuned 650i so i guess you will get lots of response...good luck.

sorry.25& to 30% bhp increase with stage 1...e.g.313bhp to 400bhp.

I've actually found numerous 2019 model year 650i's online. Here are screenshots from M-Decoder of two low mileage examples (using VINs), with production dates in late 2018.

Regardless, I'm more likely to get a 2017-2018 model year because most of those vehicles are cheaper.

The reason for the post is... I've found several good deals for 650i's in the 42k - 56k mileage range. But I'm concerned that's already too high mileage to do a stage 2 tune if I want to keep the car for 3-4 years. Concerned the motor won't last and just wanted input from anybody who may know best.

Personally, in my opinion… I feel more comfortable tuning a higher mileage car than a lower mileage. The reason why is because I like to make sure the car the maintained properly during the lower mileage “age” and running like a top. It gives me time to trust the car and to know it. Once I get to that point, I’ll maybe look into mods.

If the mileage is already high, obviously (as I’m sure you already know) make sure maintenance is complete. Learn the car for a few thousand miles and then do whatever you want. If anything breaks, let it be when the car is stock. And if the car made it to high mileage then someone at some point took good care of it earlier on. At least that’s how I see things.

It seems you may already know what it’ll take to tune these cars. Typically downpipes and a tune is enough to see significant gains.

Also, I think the final MY is 2019 like you said. I think the 6 series production ended in the fall of 2018 for the North American market.

i do apologise..i thought you were talking about the 2 door f13 coupe which definately did end production in february 2017.
i see now you are talking about f06 grand coupe..

It's all good - I was just a little confused regarding the production dates you mentioned.

Again - I'm just interested in getting opinions regarding a vehicle in 40k - 50k mileage range for stage 2 tune. I've done all the research on what needs to get done for that tune and motor issues, but still hesitant. Don't wanna get a car, invest in it, then blow the motor. Still so subjective, but... I dunno, figured it was worth asking experts on here.
