I REFUSE to valet my car. When I am in Oahu I have no choice but that is a rental so I deal with it. But my personal car I never ever valet it. I hate the idea of it....like I can't park my own car any better than you? GTFO

A few years ago, I had weekly doctor appointments at a busy medical office complex. They *only* offered free valet parking to patients, to an off-site lot. More than once, they asked us to move our vehicle-du-jour from the drop off area to the far end of the sidewalk where they just left it. Every vehicle that we own has a manual transmission, and it turns out that not one of their valet drivers knew how to drive a stick shift!

Their loss was our gain, because we could make a quick post-appointment getaway with our car sitting in front of the building and not having to wait 5-10 minutes for a valet to fetch it from the off-site lot.....

Is UncleWede showing us an old VW pattern, with the push-down for reverse?

Six of one, half dozen of the other because millennials couldn't find reverse even with it drawn out in front of them... well beside them, you know what I mean.

I learned to drive in a '75 Beetle. My father marked out a track for me in a gravel pit including up to the top of one of the stock piles. He showed me how to pull away from a stop on the road up the stock pile. Then he said don't come back until you think you can do it right. I had to get him to fill the gas tank twice that day. I had a blast and certainly learned the basics of driving a stick. Oh and the Beetle was my mother's DD and just over a year old. She wasn't quite as happy as I was.

My first car was a'63 bug; my HS girlfriend had a Euro '65 bug; my pop liked squarebacks; my mom had a 411 & a 412 (say what?).
All fondly remembered!

LOL. A friend of mine used to have a '69 Chevy C10 stepside with a well built 350 small block and the original 3-on-the-tree. When I say original, I mean it, right down to whatever was left of the linkages and bushings. Even if you knew how to shift a decent 3-on-the-tree chances are you wouldn't get his to 2nd gear. The trick was you had to come up from 1st, across the middle and then stop for about a half second to let the linkage settle and then go up into 2nd. If you didn't hesitate in the middle of the shift the linkage would bind up and leave you in neutral until you got under the hood and wiggled it back in to a gear, any gear.
He had all kinds of power but you couldn't really use it because you couldn't shift with any kind of speed or confidence. It would run with just about anything once you got into 3rd though.
